.22 mag revolvers?

Taurus 941 is available with a 4" barrel. They can be hit or miss, though; there are reports of lemons out there. I bought one last year and it was a good one. Very heavy DA trigger, but shooting SA the trigger is fine. It's a great field gun, and cheap enough I don't worry too much about it.

But my favorite .22WMR is a 5.5" stainless Single Six convertible. It's a hoot to shoot. And for hunting purposes, a SA is just as good as a DA.

When I think of Colt, I am reminded of the old TV comedy show, "Taxi."

There is one episode where the boss (Louie) yanks Jim (the spaced-out druggy) by the ear with a pair of pliers.

This happens early in the show. Jim doesn't react and doesn't appear again in the show until the last second or two, when he suddenly goes "OWWW!" and grabs his ear.:p

I know alot of people don't like the Heritage revolvers (although, I don't know why..) however mine is wonderful. Accurate, inexpensive and just plain fun to shoot.

Yup, gun guy just called and left a message, he's offering the 941s in all barrel lengths. No prices though. I'll know more tomorrow.

Heritage Rough Rider

Heritage Mfg. Co. (www.HeritageMfg.com ) Has some very nice 'Rough Rider' SA revolvers, in both aluminum alloy and in steel, w/ barrel lengths of 3.5 - 9".

Reasonably priced, with both 22LR and 22Mag ccylinders included. Check 'em out.

Personally, I don't think the difference between a high-velocity .22 long rifle and a .22 magnum - shot out of shorter (5" or less) barrels comes even close to the bother (and probably expense) of finding a quality DA revolver in .22 mag. And the people who have mentioned that the .22 magnum will be louder aren't kidding - it will be a LOT louder and sharper report.

Seriously - give a LOT of consideration to simply getting a quality .22 long rifle revolver and then using good ammo in it. Heck of a wider variety of ammo readily available for it too - and much less expensive.

Actually - you'd probably be doing yourself a HUGE favor by simply moving to a good state and then getting a .357. Probably cheaper in the long run too. ;)

my brother has a ruger single six that stays at my house, because he has small children, and no gun safe. i use it occasionally. it is a nice gun. it does not fit my hands well, it is to small. but the thing i do not like about it is it is a single action. if your going to have a gun for any kind of back up, do you really wnat to have to pull the hammer back every time? personally, i would go with a double action. its a fun gun to plink with, and shoots great. just not my idea of a "back up" gun. i own a walther p22, semi-auto, shoots great, fits my hand well, the safety is a little stiff for my taste, but other than that its a fine gun. light, easy to carry, 10 shots, change the clip and you have 10 more that fast. reasonably priced too. i cant see where you could go wrong with one of these. sorry, i forgot you wanted a 22 mag.

Interesting thought because in that case I could just take along the Colt Challenger I have in .22lr and not even bother buying a new gun, just a holster. I wonder how hot a round it can take. Don't know how old it is, have to check. I just figured I wanted as much as I could get in .22 rimfire.

Well,,,here's an update...

Just talked to gun guy, he's going to get me a Taurus 941 4" in .22 mag for $300 plus tax which is right where I wanted to be on price, so I guess I'll go for it. He says his wife carries one in 2" and loves it.

Thanks for the links! That 4" Taurus looks pretty interesting and not too bad on price.

Glad to help. I really like the small-frame Taurus revolvers. Be sure to tell us how you like it.

I've never understood why some people 'badmouth' the 22 Mag in a handgun and at the same time sing the praises of the 22LR. The 22 Mag revolver has a lot going for it.

The number 1 reason is that (with similar bullet weights) it gives you 22LR 'rifle' velocities out of a short, handy gun. A Smith M51, 650 or 651 or a Charter, Taurus or Ruger with a 3.5"-4" barrel is like having a 20" barrel 22 rifle in your pocket.

Yes it's loud and the ammo costs more, but for what it is, I think it's worth it.

My first choice,..S&W 651 4 inch. had one,...best little shooter I ever had. Went down the road long ago though,...next choice,..for hunting, the Ruger Single Six in any design in whatever length suits you.

For the following reasons:

1. .22 LR ammo is cheap -- so cheap you can shoot thousands and thousands of rounds.

2. .22 LR gives you adequate power for small game hunting. You gain very little by using .22 WMR -- I never lost a squirrel with a .22 LR handgun that would have fallen stone dead if hit in the same spot with a .22 WMR.

3. .22 LR ammo is avaliable in more different styles and loadings -- you are more likely to find something your gun will shoot really well.

4. Until recently, .22 WMR ammo just wasn't all that accurate.

Taurus makes one on there small frame. I had to find some Pachmyr (SP) grips that brought it up to a "K" sized grip. I've had it since the day before "Brady" went into effect & LOVE it.

I honestly don't have much need for a 22 WMR handgun. I do own a couple. I view it much like a 25 ACP handgun; lots of noise and no substantial punch. I like to shoot guns, so yeah, get one! :)

Rifle, yes definitely! Currently don't own a 22 mag in a rifle. I'm waiting to see what happens with the 5mm and I honesly have little use for the 22 mag rifle in the first place other than punching holes in targets.

I have always liked the .22 WMR cartridge. I have a bolt-action rifle and a old revolver chambered for it, but I am looking for a new wheelie to shoot this fine little round. The one I have in mind is this;

http://www.taurususa.com/products/product-details.cfm?id=373&category=Revolver

It is a 5", 8-shot, SS .22 WMR. A perfect trail gun to me.

I have a Taurus M66SS4, 7-shot .357 that is absolutely smooth and accurate, so I'm willing to give the little Taurus a try.

DA

I have a convertible 12" barrelled DA H&R 676 w/the 2 cylinders. I paid $300 for a LNIB (really!) revolver with all of the original papers in the original box. It's a fairly powerful tack driver. The thing is magnificent. Some with normal sized barrels are always on gunbroker, auctionarms, etc for quite a bit less.

I know Ruger or S&W have higher finish levels, but I wanted a double action convertible so I was left with an old H&R. The 676 line, BTW, is of much nicer quality than the more commonly available H&Rs, like the 922 model. The trigger on the 676 is pretty sweet.

Vern: This thing also fires .22LR as well as .22WMR. Best of both worlds.

I would opt for the Ruger Single Six, with both cylenders. I have three in the cabinet. I also have a High Standard Longhorn single action revolver with both cylenders. It has a 9 1/2" barrel and shoot great. I don't know if they are still made, but they might be worth a look on Gunbroker. As for 22LR I have a Ruger Mark II, and a Dan Wesson Revolver that is a dream to shoot fast. It is extremely smooth. I have been happy with all of these.

good shooting

Not CUrrent Production but

Not to many of the old S&W Model 51 Kit Gun show up on
gunbroker.com but right now, there's three K-22 Model 48s I like
this one....

http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=95074361

of course the K-22 was only offered with a 6' or 8 3/8ths Bbl. lengths.
but if you want the .22 mag why use a 4" Bbl. and blow powder out the
end of the barrel?

It would be nice if S&W would offer the new MOdel 63 - j-frame 8 shot
.22 lr. with 5" Bbl. also in a .22 Mag version, the 651?
