We went to the gun show today. This gun really caught my eye. I've never seen anything like it. It's a double barrel bolt action chambered in 416 rem. They wanted $70,000. That blew my mind. Anybody ever seen anything like it? Familiar with the manufacturer?

well i will say, ive never seen, or heard of a double barrel bolt action......so i imagine they are probably pretty rare

after some google fu.....it would seem that is a 'Szecsei Double Bolt'....used for african big game hunting....obviously.

from everything ive gathered.....that price of $70K isnt too far off....

I have seen such rifles online, but never in person. It is beautiful, but I would not entertain $70,000.

.... You go to swankier gunshows than I do.

I've never seen anything like that, but it sure is interesting.

I saw an article on these rifles years ago. I believe they were made by one man who was obviously a master machinist. They are unique in all the world, and I wonder what they would fetch at auction?

I had the opportunity to hold it and check it out. It's truly art in the form of a rifle. The same vendor had an extremely impressive double barrel inlaid with gold even at the muzzle. There was a cartridge sitting next to it bigger than a 500 nitro expres but I'm not sure what it was. He also had two very old but pristine Gatling guns. He was clearly a collectible/antique dealer.

OOC, can someone tell me why double rifles are so highly favored for African hunts? Is it mostly a traditional thing that people like to hold onto?

Only thing I can figure in terms of practicality is a very fast and nearly perfect reliability follow-up shot. But then, two shots and you're pretty much screwed... What if you need a third? Well that's what the PH is for, right? But then why have a second shot at all?

For $70k I'd have to rely on it to survive because I'd be out into the cold and homeless after the wife saw the bill.

On second thought, I wouldn't survive. She'd probably kill me with it

From reading gun magazines in the barber shop and listening to barber chair experts, I have heard all my life that the double rifle handles both more powerful ammunition and guarantees a more reliable follow-up shot than any other rifle type. Also, if you are stalking dangerous game and they decide to stalk you, two shots are about all you'll get and you will want more power and more reliablity than most bolt action, pumpaction, leveraction, or autoloading rifles can guarantee.

.700 Nitro Express. Let's party!

FWIW - there was a specialty gun shop here in Denver called M.W.Reynolds, closed now I think, that had all kinds of really high-end and high-dollar guns like that and the ammo & accessories for them. Pretty amazing to see a whole rack of four and five-figure firearms. Beautiful stuff.

<edit> Looks like they merely relocated, that's good! Hate to see any place go under. http://www.mwreynolds.com/

That's not a 700 nitro, it is a 4 bore. That bullet probably weighs around 2000 grains. 700s are loaded with jacketed bullets, 4 bores never are. A 700 round is smaller in diameter than the average adult thumb, this round is quite a bit larger.

No action to cycle means fastest followup shot period.

Probably comes in handy when something is pretty pissed that you shot it. :)

Oh Contraire MonSieur....:)

You can have any bullet you'd like custom made for a 4 Bore. And you can have lead cast bullets made for a .700NE. I have a good friend who makes 4 Bore cases and bullets to order. They are about $200 per round retail for monolithic solids.

Here is a 4 Bore loaded with a monolithic solid next to a minuscule little .470 NE for comparison. The 4 bore bullet is a 1600 gr flat nosed copper bullet and the .470 is loaded with a 500 gr Monolithic flat nosed copper solid. These are from my collection.

Here is a nice comparison that I found on the net. Notice that the 4 Bore in this picture is also a copper bullet.

Not so much for hunts, bolt guns are favored by a wide margin by hunters. But guides much prefer them for stopping charges at close range. A bolt gun is going to be more accurate for longer shots. But nothing is quicker than a double up close.

Several factors. With 24" barrels they have about the same overall length as a repeater with 20" barrels making them very handy in thick stuff.

They tend to point and balance much like a well made shotgun.

The good ones are extremely reliable, but good ones start in the $10K range.

You can get off 2 aimed shots faster than any other action type, and with practice you can reload and get off 4 shots a lot faster than most people can with a bolt gun. Other action types hold more ammo, but are much slower to reload.

I think most guides would prefer a good double to protect themselves and clients. But not all can afford the price. CRF bolt guns are pretty popular too, probably more so. But primarily for economic reasons.

Two fast shots, yes but also the way these guns are made ensures absolute dead reliability of those two shots. The lockwork of a "best grade" British double is truly amazing.

Holy smokes H&H! Those are in your 'collection' meaning in Africa you shot some samples of those!!! Not on my shoulder!!!

Never thought of a .470 as minuscule! LOL!

Nice gun!

Greg

I would like to play with that one to see how it works.

Shoot one barrel and it chunks one round and the empty case I guess? Go back and take a video or more photos of how the bolt works and breech face.

Four bore sounds great. I can hardly wait for the Freedom Arms revolver version. I hope it is six rounds, since five might not be enough.
