First 300 Win Mag/What To Get

Well, I am trying to narrow it down and stay a little less that $1,000 right now to give me more options on a more expensive scope. I definitely will want a Bi-Pod on it. I picked up a Rem 700 Long Range at the Store yesterday and really liked it but dang it was heavy. Guess I am use to my AR-10 chambered in .308. After holding the Rem 700 I fully understand the importance of the need know your purpose of shooting. Not sure if i would want to carry that Rem 700 around all day for hunting. So since I adjusted my price range to around $700-$800 range now to allow for a much better scope what would most of the consensus be from the following listed guns.

Savage Trophy XP-$699-8.45 lbs 24" barrel
Browning AB3 Redfield Center Fire Rifle Pkg. $699- 6.10 lbs 26" barrel
T/C Dimension $689-7 lbs-24" barrel
Remington 700 Long Range $739.00 9 lbs 26" barrel
Savage Long Range Hunter $800 8.65 lbs 26" Barrel

I know the Savage Trophy and Browning already have a scope but not what I will be wanting long term but I could be out shooting right away. But would replace later with a much more expensive scope. I really like the grip angle on the T/C Dimension. The Rem and Savage long range would be excellent for rested shooting especially with a Bi-Pod.

I know every ones opinions will vary and I have adjusted my price ranges. These prices are all for new guns, I have not had any luck as of yet finding some used ones. But any specific pro's and con's for the ones listed above? I have heard Savage because you can modify everything, heard Rem 700 straight out of the box is excellent etc. I would appreciate any input on the above rifles and if i have missed any in that same price range please let me know.

I truly appreciate all the help and feedback. Thanks again.

I found a used Remington 700 P 300 Win Mag for $850. Is that a decent price if in good condition? It lists the following:

26" 1:10 twist barrel
HS Precision stock
caldwell swivel bipod
weaver rail
walker trigger
box included

I have Rem 700's and recently got a Savage Trophy XP. Both good rifles. The Rem is a 7mag and the Savage is 30-06. I am liking the Savage better right now but only shot factory loads so far in it. Either would be a fine choice.

Grumulkin,
nice shooting.
How many times can you reload that brass and maintain a .211" group?

This looks like a pretty fair deal. Figure the HS Precision Stock a $350 upgrade. You will like it a lot, at least I like mine. If you wanted to sell it you might still get $200-$250 for it. CDNN has take-off Rem 700 LA stocks for something like $40. So if you had to get the price down a little further you could do that.

But my Stainless 700 in .308 wears the HS proudly and it is leaps and bounds above any of the all-weather stocks that most of the Remington's ship with.

Read where Remington had a massive recall on the Walker triggers somewhere like back in 2014. Is there a way to verify if this rifle has the original Walker Trigger or if it was replaced with a newer one? Thanks

What about Sabatti? Are they any good or decent rifles? I really like the looks of the Sabatti Rover Tactical 300WM Inox. Does anyone know anything about them or have personal experience shooting one?

Could someone who has Remington 300 WM's please tell me the difference between these three Remington 700's. I know one says 5-R and the other is a Sendero which both have been mentioned on here as recommended rifles, but is the price worth it to jump from $655 to over $1,000. I am just thinking that's $500 or so I could put toward a Scope. Thanks

like new. Price tag still says $1100.

Mike C2, is that Walker trigger an issue you think on this gun? I am really liking this Rem 700 like you said and think it will be a great choice. I am just worried about the trigger recall and wish it was a stainless barrel. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much

For hunting, I'm a huge fan of the Win M70 Extreme Weather. SS, a Bell& Carlson stock with full aluminum bedding block, and controlled round feed. I have a 7mm RM and a .30-06 in that rifle...both shoot to >1MOA with Federal Premium ammo.

As to caliber, I'd suggest that you look at .300 WSM as a possible alternative to the .300 WM. The Win 70 EW comes in both calibers and, for hunting, the game won't know the difference but you will in practice.

Good luck

Thanks Flatbush Harry, that is a sweet looking rifle. I have never been a big hunter but it is something I would not mind getting into someday. I was originally looking for more long range shooting but it would be a nice option to have a rifle I could hunt with as well if I wanted. From what I have seen it has gotten great reviews and the weight of the rifle is really decent. Thanks for another option!

Sorry this may be a stupid question but what is the difference between a Remington 700 and a Remington 770? I see a Remington 770 in 300 Win Mag with a scope (did not specify which brand scope) I am sure a cheap one for $325 on Armslist. Seems really cheap. I have a feeling I am going to end up having more than one of these and in different Calibers. Is the 770 a good gun and it that a good price to pick up for my first 300 WM?

Had some medical bills come up so so my budget had decreased for the time being.

Thanks

Personally I would avoid the .300WM like the plague. Not only does it have a lot of recoil, but it's very unpleasant sharp recoil. I'd much rather shoot a .375 H&H.

The worse problem in that it doesn't actually do anything particularly well. For long range target shooting, you're much better off with something in a 6mm or 6.5mm caliber. For hunting, it's overkill for the vast majority of species (you'd be better off with .270, 7mm mag, etc. for deer and elk) and too small a diameter for great bears and bison if you somehow manage to wrangle a tag. It's really not the ideal caliber for anything.

If you have to buy a .300WM, definitely buy one used. Along with .338WM they're far and away the most common gun for someone to buy, shoot less than a box trying to zero it, realize that the recoil sucks, and sell it. So the used market is incredibly soft.

I agree with the M70 as a good platform. I've got both Winchesters and Remingtons, and if I could turn all my Remingtons into M70s I'd do it in a snap. The action is more reliable, feels much better to operate, the safety & trigger setup is MUCH better, and in practice both are very accurate. A M70 supergrade 7mm mag shooting 175gr partitions is my go-to hunting rifle.

If you deal with wet weather, the extreme weather model is nice.

Man Llama Bob, you are really starting to get me to reconsider the .300WM. LOL. I already have a horrible shooting shoulder, have no cartilage left and it's bone on bone. Guess I am going to have to shoot the 300wm a little more to make sure. If I do purchase one I guess I will go used like you mentioned.

Best bang for the buck, first of all BUY USED, there are a TON of these out there on forums and gun shops for sale under $500.
New or used get a Browning A bolt 2 . IF u r recoil shy, get one w/ the built in BOSS compensator. Mine has one and is NO more recoil than my lightweight Ruger Am. 30-06.
I bought mine used (Stainless Stalker version) for $400

NO reason to buy a 300 WM new except to waste $ u could have spent on ammo, glass, or your kids college tuition.

Older Enfield versions also nice, if no break/compensator then avoid a light synthetic stock and go w/ heavy wood. Try to resist urge to shoot rabbits or at funny angles, w/ less than 3" eye relief as this will result in facial scaring

I would vote for a Browning Acera, if you can find one. My rifle in .300WinMag is always a topic of conversation at deer camp.

However, I do admit I am overly prejudiced in that, LOL.
