Do you like checkering on a 1911?

Yes. It helps when I'm shooting in wet conditions.

I can take it or leave it. I have 1911s with checkering and 1911s without it. Also lets not forget grooving the front of the grip on 1911s.

Also this discussion brings back memories of the old Safariland pistols.

Yes, and I've sold every 1911 of mine that didn't have it in favor of buying models that did.

Finally actually looked, my 1911 guns either are smooth or have grooves. None have stipple or checkering.

The simplest way to try checkering on the front strap of an M1911 is to put a bit of skateboard tape there, cut so the edges are under the grip. Cheap and effective.

I refer to the OP repeated above. It does not address wood (usually grips) or metal.

No, generally on the metal. I can tolerate vertical lines on an arched mainspring or backstrap, of an A1 model. Maybe some comfortable checkering or vertical lines on the front of the trigger guard, but I prefer smooth.

The OP does not address stippling, or vertical lines (as I am guilty of above).

Whatever is most comfortable to you, or whatever blows up your skateboard is OK.
