What would be a ball park estimate for the following:
Colt Python, blue finish in perfect condition, original grips, 6" barrel, late 70s/early 80s manufacture, no box or docs.

I see crazy prices asked for them, but what are they selling for?

I didn't check for you but maybe Gunbroker or Bud's Guns or other popular websites could bring clarity to the matter for you. I would offer a guess that the asking price for what you describe would be +-$1,200.

Yes, it's in immaculate condition. I have owned it since the late 80s. I never shoot it.

I have a 4" and 6" both in very good to excellent condition. The 6" has the box. I could list either for $2,500 but that doesn't mean I'll get it. I am seeing Pythons in very good to excellent condition with asking prices exceeding $3,000. Asking price is one thing, what the guns actually sell for or change hands is another story. On a good day either of my guns is worth what someone is willing to pay, no more and certainly no less.

My advice is see what they are going for in your area. Then if you want to sell the gun put it out with the price you see as fair. Heck, list the gun at $3,000 if you feel it's fair. Then wait and see what offers you get.

Reminds me I have to find a set of correct grips for the 6" gun I have. That one came from my brother who needed money awhile back.

This auction always seems to have a few of them. This is a monthly auction with no reserves. If the gun in the first link had the correct grips, it would have gone for more. The bidding on the grips will be done tonight. I think the numbers the gents have given you above are good.

Have you ever done any business with Gunrunner?

I owned a 1969 Colt Python with the 4" barrel, blued, and aftermarket grips (Nill grips) and sold it locally about this time last year for $1800...my full asking price. It had been shot (as far as I know and other experts could tell) a total of 37 times...once from the factory, 18 full power .357 magnum loads and 18 .38 special loads by me, my father and my brother. It was pristine, but no papers, box or original grips. Start at $2000 (maybe a little higher) and you may get it, but don't go lower than $1800 is my recommendation.

Part of it depends on your location, last saturday at my local FFL someone paid 2K for one with serious were on the blueing and someone had filed the front sight down to nothing.

A couple of hours later I sold my mint 6" Python from 1981 for $2,500 - I was asking for 3K but i needed to move it quickly, I have seen them in the mid 4's in California.

$750, at least that is all I'd pay, but then I don't think Colts are some holy object or something.

People who buy these things always hope to find a sucker to pay them more down the road.

A friend recently sold two nickel Pythons, a 4" and a 6", with no boxes/etc and replaced grips for $4000 total. These were not like new but still in pretty good condition.

VERY good condition Pythons, at my LGS will be TAGGED around $2500.00, maybe as high as 2900, if they have the box and such. They sell.

I have no idea what they actually sell for, but they move.

Edited to add: I was just checking our local "gun for sale" board. There are two Pythons listed on there. One is a 6", SS, with box and papers. Asking price is $4000.00.

The other, 4", blue, seller (a dealer) states 98% condition (it looks it), no box or papers mentioned. Firm price listed...$3200.00.

Again, those are asking prices. No idea what they'll go for.

The last Python I saw left Cabela's about a week ago for $2500. 4 inch blued in 90%condition. It resided in the library for 2 weeks prior to adoption. Later that day I adopted a S&W 686+ for $690. It had been collecting dust for 2 months. I don't know what it is, but snake guns cause complete firearm acquisition derangement for some people.

Around here they usually have price tag of about $3000 with short barrel variants costing more. Not sure what motivates people to buy them but I would hold on to the one you have and keep it in condition it is. It is hard to believe, but I think they will bring even more in the future.

Yes I have. Never any issues. Be sure to read all the rules for buying and selling. They charge Ohio sales tax to in state purchasers and also a buyers fee and shipping. It adds up, especially on an expensive item.

Thanks, I have met the people and they seemed nice. My friend stores his truck during winters at the Burton County Fairgrounds close to a warehouse they work out of so we stopped there last fall. Told the guy if I win an auction I'll just come get my gun. They seemed like nice folks. Thanks for sharing your views.

I admit I do not understand who buys these guns at current asking prices. I will say this it is well worth holding on to if one already has such gun. Colt Python has become to revolver what Tiffany lamp is to a lighting fixture. Obviously there are good number of people with disposable incomes wanting such revolver. Happily we now have current production alternatives in forms of Nighthawk and Manuhrin (Chapuis Armes).

Saw one sell for 3K a week ago in a local shop. About 95%, if that and not even original grips. Insane.

That's about $1K off.

Off the top of my head I can't think of a single game that lets you play by your own rules. You might not pay more than $750 for one but you wouldnt get one for that . That wouldnt bother your you but thats not to stop someone paying more than $2K for one who actually wanted one.
