Also forgot, the Brownell's magazines are available with MagPul's no tilt follower as well as the milspec one with a slight difference in price. Sportsmansguide has also carried the Brownell's mags in the past but cannot recall whether higher or lower than Brownell's price.

I've been buying Pmag's when they are on sale, a few at a time. I'm up to (9) 30 rounders, (7) 20 rounds and (4) aluminum G.I mags, which I put magpul followers in.

I'm good at 20 magazines, but that's just me.

I also bought a Hex-Mag, just to try it out, because they are supposed to be reliable. Well it is, mine's been feeding 100%.

does anyone know if the PMAGS (which i agree are excellent quality) use chrome silicon springs or SS or what?

not that it matters personally, since i've never personally worn out any AR mag spring, but I'm curious

Any reason why?

The only ones I know to stay away from are the older straight 20 rounders as they weren't 100% on feeding.

I've had pretty good luck with gen 2 pmags. Current gen 2 uses the same polymer as gen 3. The gen 3 geometry is a bit different and more compatible with other, non AR designs. But, as far as I know both gens are gtg with respect to the AR family of rifles.

Any reason to avoid gen 2?

https://www.bayoutactical.com/difference-between-magpul-pmag-gen-m2-and-pmag-gen-m3/

1. Dust Cover – This is one of the biggest differences between the two generations. The Gen M2 does not ship with an impact/dust cover anymore. Dust covers are shipped with all Gen M3 models. This allows shooters to keep debris out of their loaded or unloaded magazines. It also protects the feed lips from impacts while bouncing around your storage box. Dust covers are a personal preference and a debate for another time. Note: Magpul PMAG Gen M3 dust covers do not fit PMAG Gen M2 magazines.

2. Floorplate – The butt plate on the Gen M3 is slimmer than the Gen M2. This makes it easier to fit into tight mag pouches.

3. Platforms – In addition to all AR-15 rifles that the Gen M2 operate on, the Gen M3 operates on non-Colt-spec platforms such as SCAR MK 16/16S, HK 416, HK MR556A1, M27 IAR, British SA-80, and others as well.

4. Over-insertion Stop – The Gen M3 has an over-insertion stop on the spine of the magazine. This allows for more aggressive magazine changes with no danger of malfunctions or over-insertion.

5. Dot Matrix – The Gen M3 has a paint pen dot matrix located toward the bottom on the side of the magazine so that one can mark up their magazines i.e. MAG1, MAG2

Some of the other differences mentioned by Magpul are that the Gen M3 has improved overall strength, a new low-friction, four-way anti-tilt follower. The color of the follower in the Gen M3 is grey to differentiate it from the Gen M2 follower which is brownish in color.

IMO, original USGI contract, D&H, Brownells, Gen3 Pmags, etc. should all serve you well...

My pleasure.

I like the fact that they are a bit stronger and have the over-insertion stop.

AR-15 mags at 44mag.com

Mark (44mag.com) has a box of 100 if you want bulk - He also has almost every brand/type at a reasonable price.
Get them when you can,
During the last ban, I bought a broken stock AR-15 to get the 14 mags that it came with. I fixed the stock and still have the gun.
good luck

IIRC, the Gen III PMag also uses a slightly different Polymer blend that handles colder temps a little better. If you live in a warm area, that might not matter. If you live in Minnesota or interior Alaska, maybe it does.

C-Products & ASC both make quality aluminum mags. C Products also has blackened stainless. 8-9 dollars a mag is possible.

PMags remain the easiest to load by hand. Cheapest I have ever seen is still 10 a mag. Don't forget you will get charged shipping too.

C Products and Brownell's are good mags. Keep an eye out for used GI mags. I picked some 2 years ago for $7 each. Every one of them work just fine and 2 of them had magpuls on them.
I alos prefer 20 rounders in the AR and AK.

You pay a premium for the Colt logo on a magazine. They work great but the logo on the floor plate doesn't affect reliability. My 2-20rd Colt mags have seen hard use and have been 100% so far. I even stepped on one and slid across concrete, gouging the finish.

I gave a friend some C-products black stainless mags.. five or six years ago for his first AR, think he's still using them in competition.

The first six Pmags I bought are still going strong after six years of competition use. They get thrown on the ground, into the weeds etc, sometimes stepped on and occasionally get dirt and rocks inside the magazine. (Even a P-mag full of dirt will cause a jam.) No signs of chipping or cracking so far.

Don't forget the 10-round magazines are really handy for shooting off a bench or bi-pod. Good for testing a new load or zeroing in a scope. Really, good enough for anything short of a firefight...

The 20 round Gen 3 P-Mags are awesome, they're still short enough to shoot off of a bench or rest, I like the way the curve looks on them as well.
