Which one of these two 22's...

The Remington is a great looking gun, and the S,L,LR capability is good in theory. IMO they fall short in the reliability and accuracy department. Floating chamber, off side charging handle that is hard to operate, and floppy unsupported forearm is a let down for me in a rifle that lists for $600. The CZ's Euro modern style isn't my favorite, but they are accurate and reliable. I have the 512 in .22 WMR that will outshoot my Marlin bolt gun.

The new 552's are way overpriced IMHO.
Even worse, the new 572's.
I got an older walnut plain 572 in decent shape at a shop before xmas foe $200 out the door.
Low comb stock and no scope.
Trigger not like the one I got new for 90 bucks way back, I'll need to work on it.
Ordered Burris rings to slap a Leupold 2-7X on it.
Have had 552 and 572..............there's no need to take them all the way down to clean them.
But if you're OCD and like to risk scratching stuff up, go for it.
I've seen too many gacked from folks popping the lower receiver cover out and fighting it going back in.
Promo ammo blew up a 572 and 552 of my dad's (Scouts were using them).
I tore them all apart and replaced the damaged parts. No big deal.

Check out the Browning SA 22 very high quality, accurate and proven. RC Model recommended one to me and it is fine dependable rifle.

I would say buy the CZ, but I have only had their bolt guns.

As to the 552 I can say that after we first got married and I cleaned the wifes rifle after we went out....all I can say is WOW....as in holy WOW. How did this thing run. It was so gooked up....just caked on...and it took forever to get it apart to clean....did your dad ever take this thing all the way down....no he just ran a cleaning rod in it....how much did you shoot it....about every day after school....good night.

I can only comment on the one that she has but to say it is not reliable is BS...I can not see how that thing would run....and my box stock 10/22 will not run a box of 50 without issues...total hunk of junk.

I do think the new ones are a bit expensive....but I would say it is 10x the gun that a 10/22 is, twice the gun of a model 60. I really like them....it is the most reliable 22 automatic that I have...pistol or rifle.

well I would suggest a henry leveraction rifle as I own one model hoo1 its the best 22 rifle Ive owned yet!! with Winchester m-22 ammo its a super shooter!! henry is hard to beat!! :)

I've seen three rifles mentioned here that I literally just shot today. My last two purchases were a CZ 452 (got that one new) and a Remington 552 (used from a pawn shop). We were shooting today and my oldest's Henry came along too. Fun way to spend an hour at the range (indoor, 25-yard max).

Ok. Back to topic.

I can say that, other than a little stiffness of bolt being new, the CZ stuff is amazing - stunningly accurate even with open sights. So much so that even though I wanted the open sights (the tangent rear sight is cool), I am now thinking some sort of tip-off scope mount so I can do both interchangeably. No knowledge about CZ semis, though.

Perhaps more germane to the present discussion, I can say with authority that, especially if clean, the Remington 552 can definitely shoot LR and Shorts (I didn't have any Longs). Story follows...

I got one this week and cleaned it this morning before going to the range (by the way, yes, you do have to remove the barrel to get to the bolt, but no, it isn't too much of a pain). According to the barrel code it's either a 1998 or a 1969 - it looks more 1998-ish to me. This noted, given how much crud I cleaned out of the receiver, end of the barrel and trigger group, maybe it is a 1969, but I digress (again).

I first ran LR's through it (Federal Auto Match). Grouping was a bit to the right of center (probably knocked the scope a little off when cleaning today), but it was a tight group, for both my child and me. 10 rounds, nary a hiccup. Next I ran Remington shorts, which I believe are high powered (I don't think I have any shorts that aren't) . 10 rounds, all chambered and fired like clockwork.

Finally, I decided to really mess with it - 5 LR and 5 Shorts, alternating. LR, Short, LR, short, etc. 10 rounds, all like clockwork. Curious thing (to me anyway) is that the LRs and the Shorts all tended to group in the same place on the target.

Hope some of this helps.

1.) Tube fed 22's are great.
2.) That Remington is expensive, but it's roughly $200 cheaper than a used Browning 22BAR ...
3.) I'd BOL for a nice used one. Even GB could feed you one cheaper ...
4.) I'd look at Marlin too :)

My dad has a 552- think the receiver is aluminum with a crinkle finish. It's one of the few guns of his that I never warmed up to.

I just yesterday took my brand new 512 to the range,,,
I don't know a thing about the Remington,,,
But I'm extremely pleased with my 512.

I fired 25 rounds each of:
  • Remington Golden Bullet
  • Remington Mil Surp LRN
  • Federal Bulk Pack (Wal Mart)
  • Winchester Super X
  • Fiocchi High Velocity LRN
  • CCI Mini Mag RN
  • CCI Mini Mag HP

Not one malfunction of any kind,,,
Groups as tight as any of my other rifles (with my 65 year old eyes).

I also own the Carbine version,,,
It's a sweet little performer as well.

Like I said before,,,
I can't peak to the Remington,,,
But my 512's are definitely well performing rifles.

I am a Remington guy, so it gets my vote.
I have a 552 with a 4x32 Simmons and a Remington 550-550-1 with a 4x weaver.

I'm not recommending the Remington just because I have one, but because I know they are super reliable with all kinds of ammo, and also because they're super accurate.

If you shoot Remington shotguns, the safety is in the right place on the 552 also.

As stated before I believe Remington has upped their game big time the last couple of years and wouldn't hesitate to buy a Remington today.

For whatever reason my 512 is easily the favorite rimfire I've ever owned and I've owned a few in 57 years.

I own a dozen .22 cal rifles. I own several Remington and CZ rifles. I do not own either brand in a .22 semi-auto. I think either one would be a fine choice.

I've rarely met a rimfire I didn't like with a few exceptions, most related to disassembly or reliability (used ones). Ugly as they are, I really appreciate the versatility of the 10/22. Best of luck with your decision.
