I was asked to replace a hammer for a S&W mod. 145 in .38 cal. My question is frame size.
This gun was issued only to CA. police oficers and had the single action notch removed from the hammer.

No this is a mod 145 revolver .38 spcl. If I could post a picture you would see. Just because you've never seen one does not mean it doesn't really exist.

While this is generally true, it is unlikely in this case as S&W never made a Model 145. While they have had 300, 400, 500, and 600 series pistols, there just isn't a 100 series revolver.

While it is hard to tell without a picture of the whole gun, an educated guess is that you are dealing with a Model 14-5.

Have you done much work on S&W revolvers?

choppero, take my word for it, I've been collecting S&W for 50 years. There is no such thing as a 145. What you are seeing is a 14-5 with the - lightly or not struck. Does the revolver have a full underlug? That's the 14-5. they started in 1991 with a run of 2,000 and then in 1992 became standard production until the 14-6 in 1994. There is no mention of them being built for police in California in the S&W Standard Catalog.

someone owes someone an apology.
Yep 14-5 and I apologize to anyone who took a fence. The LA Police Dept is his 68-2.
Now that my head is back on straight and some what on my shoulders I have a problem with the 14-5 hammer replacement. I located a standard spur (.375) hammer for it. The original is the .5 target hammer. But when it is installed, the rebound slide won't return without slightly drawing the hammer back. Very frustrating in double action. Tried a heaver spring, no help.

But when it is installed, the rebound slide won't return without slightly drawing the hammer back.

You mean the hammer slightly draws back from it's bottom-most position as the trigger returns to it's fully-forward position? Unless I'm missing something, that's what's supposed to happen.

I should have included "without me slightly drawing the hammer back" The rebound slide is supposed to perform this action.

Check the fit of the hammer onto the stud, and the rebound slide on it's stud, it could be binding in either place. Did you try a new rebound slide spring, or a new mainspring?

I solved the problem. The hammer bottom platform, where it meets the face of the rebound slide was binding. A fine honing stone on that ramped surface took out the slight roughness and then Brownells Action Lub Plus, with repeated double action, freed it up. Works great now. And It retains the lighter rebound slide spring.
