I understand chronographs are not the end all to reloading...but dang I had four hours of fun just testing rounds, primers, loads and variations of all today. Spent another 2 hours just messing with the data. I posted some of the data in their specific post areas, mostly about BE 86 and Shooters World Tactical Powder. Wish I had access to a chunk of land to do some more but the local outdoor shooting range at the State Park will have to work for now.

I'm fortunate to have that capability, rifle and pistol range. :) The down side is that I'm limited to 100yrds. I even built a shooting bench that sits in my front yard (between garage and shop), making it very convenient. My neighbors come over when they want to shoot, too. The bad part is that I'm having to deal with the hogs rutting up my yard and fields.

:cool:Blue,
That's my retirement dream (being able to shoot outside my house.(not dealing with a hog problem)
Maybe you could round up some THR members for hog elimination?
I understand they are a major pain.

About 35 years ago when I was in school I had a friend who knew some one who had orchards.
The hogs would come in and tear up the trees. The owner of the property had a permit to kill all hogs so he would let us shoot on his land and give us a few bucks if we got any hogs.
Worked out well since we could go shoot and with the couple bucks he gave us pay for our ammo.
He had the hogs butchered and gave the meat to homeless shelters so they didn't go to waste.

Chronographs aren't just interesting and informative; they're also fun. Got my first in 1997 and still have it. It started out as a basic Shooting Chrony and after the first ten years I sent it back in for their upgrade service and now its got more memory and a few other features of the deluxe Shooting Chrony's. When I first got it I spent most of an afternoon with it and a couple .22 rifles and lots of different 22 LR ammo. Practiced using the chrony, retrieving and comparing data, and how to erase memory when you're finished with the data. It was a lot of fun and it got me real familiar with the chrony and it was a cheap lesson because I was only using 22LR. My main use for it is now testing handloads for both rifle and pistol and it's become standard procedure for all my handloads and factory ammo. Also makes having a ballistics program on your computer feasible because you need to know the velocity of any ammo when it's coming out of YOUR gun versus a test barrel in a ballistics lab. I'd have to rate a decent chronograph as a "must have" for any serious handloader or anybody who likes to be a "ballistic geek".

Only if the hogs ran on a schedule, it would be a lot easier to control them. I have setup wifi cameras around my feeder and get an alert any times something trips them. The hogs will come through for 1-3 days and gone for 7-21days. Some times they show up during daylight which makes shooting easy. The last one I shot was with night vision from my back porch. I have a shooting stand setup on my back porch, 100 yrds from the feeder. All I do is slip out the back door, get comfortable (allow my eyes to adjust), decide which one to take out, then let it rip. Then I normally drag it off for the coyotes and vultures to clean up. Normally no sign any thing was there within 24-48hrs. I don't have a lot of acreage, 32 ac. 27ac of which is all timber. I have neighbors that go out regularly when they start rutting up the hay fields. One drives the other uses a 300BO with FLIR, and a can sticking out the door window. He normally gets 4+ out of group of 7-8. His 12 yr old son shot a 400lb bore this last week. Since I'm retired, I normally wait till I get an alert, then bring up the camera. If there I get the 458 SOCOM ready (setting by the back door) for action. They don't move when hit with a 300gr TAC-TX moving 1600 fps. So it's not possible to just hunt at my place. It's more of a waiting game. I've had more problem with coons the last couple of years. They have stripped my peach trees 3 yrs in a row. So I have gone to war after them. My neighbors are surprised they are still coming after taking out 18 this year, some shot some trapped (then shot).

Crony the hogs? Easy, 0 fps after hit with the SOCOM :)

I did some chronographing to day too for my new AR upper that I built. Perfect day, only 2MPH wind and pretty cool early when I started. Sorted out the load, then zero'd and verified dope out to 300. Had to make 2 turns because my 1st 5 loads were a little on the slow side, first time I'd loaded H335 with a Nosler 60 BT. So I cruised back to the house (100yds) and made another 3 loads to test. Found a sweat spot, cruised back up and loaded another 20 to shoot for zero and test at distance.
