Where are the combo guns?

After I shot this moose,

I kept the camp stocked with ducks and grouse with the shot bbls...

One time while I was walking my trap line, I shot this fox with the 22 bbl...

The shot bbls are pretty handy, I hunted turkeys with my drilling and shot this nice Tom,

I've shot a lot of white tails with the rifle bbl., some of them were pretty nice,

It's my "go to gun", I hunt everything with it!

Just seen several Savage combos at a local gun show. Have to admit they were a bit pricey but they were there. Even seen a modernized black plastic version.
I have a Savage 24V 30-30 over 20gauge that I purchased back in the 70’s

What a bunch of nonsense!

I've been hunting with combo guns for MANY years, they are extremely useful for keeping you fed!

I took three bulls that day with my 12ga./30-06 and it's no problem at all reaching out to get them too, as it's very accurate!

Here I was testing scope removal and reinstall accuracy,

My combo guns have been very good to me, putting tons of meat in my freezer!

Do you know if you could get one today

One also needs to check regs in their location. I think the combo guns are neat, but they arnt legal for state land here as your technically carrying both a rifle and a shotgun. Now would that be enforced, well thats up to the officer who stops you and the circumstances im sure.

In florida they dont seperate, its just a general gun season

The problem with cheaper combo guns is, they rarely have both bbls regulated to the sights at the same time. I just HATE having to aim over here to hit over there! That is one reason why I don't care for the Savage combo guns. (I've owned several)

Cheapo combo guns normally have a exposed hammer, so to choose a bbl., you have to cock the hammer and select the bbl all at the same time.

Better built (read expensive) combo guns are hammerless, so you just have pull the trigger for the bbl you want to fire, NO selector and NO fumbling around. When a bird flushes, I just pull the trigger for the shot bbl...

Better combo guns have the bbls regulated to shoot to the same place on a target. Pull up. aim and fire either bbl for a center hit on the target... They generally are lighter to carry too and offered chambered in many different cartridges.

NEW combo guns today are made by Krieghoff, Blaser, Chapuis and MANY other European makers...

Used "quality" combo guns can be found in great shape for under 2K and will easily last a life time...

I know it's "un-American", but I choose to have LESS guns, but much higher quality guns...

Bottom line is, with this "kiddi craz" mentality we have today to blast out as many rounds as possible, no they aren't popular... But, those of us that grew up and learned how to conserve ammo, making each shot count, we are doing just fine with our combo guns!"

And he is EXACTLY CORRECT. What we have to many of today is Rambo wannabe's and few actual hunters. Even those who do hunt want to be so called "LONG RANGE" hunters. The reason they want to do that is because they don't have the woodsmanship skills to stay hidden and down wind of the game they hunt, so they can't get close and make a high percentage shot. In other words, they don't know how to hunt. A real hunter will get as close as he can and only take high percentage shots. He does what Elmer Keith said he did, he did all of his hunting BEFORE the shot was made because he did not want to be hunting around all over the mountainside for what he shot. He got close and made a good shot and his game was dead in its tracks right where he shot it.

These guys with these multi round magazines today start blasting away way to quickly and before they can make a good, clean shot. They depend on being able to lay down a field of fire that will kill anything in the general area of where they saw the game. That is not a sportsman and they are dangerous to every living thing in their general area. A good hunter only needs and makes one shot unless he is hunting Cape Buffalo and there are not many of those in the woods where I hunt in the southern USA.

I use combo guns to turkey hunt because I call up and kill more coyotes when hunting turkeys than I do turkeys. I do not shoot turkeys with a rifle because I am a sport hunter and if I can't get that old gobbler to come in to my calling, then I'll leave him there for another day when maybe I can get him to come in, or one of my buddies can. But coyotes can smell where gobblers can not and they will circle downwind of you and pick up your scent, so I need to be able to shoot those suckers when I get a clear, killing shot even if it is 100 yards or more away. That is when the rifle barrel on my combo gun comes in handy. I only hunt private land, so if a state outlaws rifles, I don't get into trouble with any fish cop who is having a bad day even though I don't have any rifle ammo on me. And I am fully supportive of outlawing rifles for turkey hunting. It is not sporting and it ought to be illegal in my opinion. But that's just me because I can eat if I don't kill anything when I hunt. I ALWAYS enjoy the hunt no matter if I kill or not. And since I let every 8 point buck pass by that I see because I don't kill little bucks on the land where I hunt, when I do kill one, it is a real trophy buck. But I'm an old guy with private land to hunt and keep food plots planted year round and only have two other long time friends to hunt with me so it's easy to maintain a good breeding herd because all of us are old farts and we enjoy being on the green side of the grass and to be able to still go hunting even if we don't kill anything. Two out the three of us have and use combo guns and the other guy uses a single shot that belonged to his grand father. We did all of that blasting away when we were in the military and got it out of our systems back then and we are way over the hill to try to be Rambo now. Now we are old, wore out hunters and a combo gun suits us just fine. I have three of them and can't decide which one I like best because they are all good hunting guns depending on the game you want to hunt.

Definitely. Back in the day, most families I knew might have three guns. A centerfire hunting rifle, a rimfire rifle, and a shotgun. Handguns were more rare with the people I knew.

I remember wanting a double barrel combo gun on occasion when I was a kid, but a single barrel break open shotgun (shared with my brother) and my dad's Marlin model 60 were my reality. :)
defintelly agree with you

A man after my own heart. I have to smile when i hear the rural snipers, and shooter who want the latest wiz bang round to shoot 100 yard deer. I must have been an old fart from my 20's as all my deer hunting in England was done with a Heym-Ruger single shot rifle.
I killed hundreds of deer with that rifle and still have it. I bought my combi when i passed the Swedish hunting Exam. If the East Germans under communist times did nothing else right they made very nice Merkel guns. Combi's, drillings and single shot rifles and not forgetting double rifles are the only way to hunt.
