I do some gun smith work and a bit of milling and lathe. Nothing of great skill. I'm being asked if auto parts are ok to purchase for AR-15's. I looked at a site offering parts and as far as I could tell they were for sale without anything more than a credit card. I'm NOT going to make or work on any auto's! I would like to know what's what? Thx

If all you have are semiautomatic AR's, a stash of full-auto parts might be considered "constructive possession." They're OK if you have a registered FA.

The ATF once published a list of FA parts (selector, hammer, trigger, disconnector, bolt carrier) that were not OK to put in semiautomatic AR's. The FA bolt carrier has since been taken off that list, and is now found in many new semiautomatic AR's.

Full-auto hammers, triggers, and disconnectors can be modified to match semiauto specs, and, thus modified, they are OK.

In a nut shell, If you have the right FFL and SOT you can buy them from a number of places. That’s the “all NFA rules apply” part.

So yes new machineguns can be made legally if you follow the rules, they can’t be transferred like the 1986 and earlier ones though.

I thought you were referring to cars parts... like buying bolts and sizing threads from autozone...

I guess it depends on the part... All my BCG are advertised as "full auto bolt carrier group", because that's marketing I guess for that specific design.

if you the correct type FFL and SOT, not just a hobbyist or regular FFL. Do it without the correct licensing would guarantee you reservation at the Grey Bar Hotel, aka Club Fed.
Yes, I tried to make that clear, in the rest of the post you didn’t quote.

Stay away from the trigger parts and safety for the M-16.
