I was looking around then IT caught my eye and I heard it call my name. A Russian 1943 Izhevsk M38 never been cleaned or fired and still covered and full of cosmo. Almost couldn’t see down the barrel and went through a entire bottle of hoppes and it cleaned up well. I had one of these 20 years ago and it was hard to find then. First one I’ve seen since.

Haven’t fired this one yet. They are a mule kicker and loud as a cannon. Weather should be good enough this weekend to go to the range I hope.
Last time I shot one of the was at a 100 yard steel plate that came back and hit me in the side of the knee. Thought I was gonna die.

Nice find, I prefer the m38s....unique as they don't have the mounted sidefolder like the more common m44
Had one years ago, definately a thumper

The M38 is my favorite Mosin variant - handier than the rifles, no bayonet to get in the way, makes giant fireballs.

I like the wartime "under fire" rifles with the rough tooling marks all over. You can almost feel the desperation in the construction, but they still made them solid and safe, and usually relatively accurate. Congrats on your find, now go make some fireballs and defend Mother Russia.

I have a Hungarian M44. I put a rubber pad on it. Lights up the night time sky with its huge fireball. You found a nice one. Enjoy.

That sure will make somefireballs and generate some muzzle blast compared to the longer Mosins but they're still neat and that's quite a find. Haven't seen one that nice looking in years.

P.O. Ackley Should have named his .22-378 the Powderburner Shoulderpounder...as these short-barreled Mosins were the original Eargesplitten Loudenboomers!

Nice find
Stay safe!

What did get it for? I am curious as to what prices are else where, especially in Surplus Heaven. :)

I remember buying a model 91/59 carbine for each one of my three sons when they were still $40 apiece! The Turkish M 38 Mauser's or $39 apiece and M 96 Swedish Mauser's or $59 apiece. Glad I got to live through it by what I could and watch them all disappear. I regret not buying the semi automatic Swedish AG42B for $169 back then.

Man, I sure miss seeing any for a decent price now a days. My first 91/30 was $40 at the gunshow, and the most I ever spent was $145 for my Chinese T53, but that was well worth it, rare rifle to see where I am at.

These and the Enfield jungle carbines make really huge fireballs best seen near sundown.

Had an M-38. Fun rifle - Uncle Ivan was a tough old bird, though. Big kick, and the Czech Silvertip light ball ammo makes a giant fireball. Wish I still had it. Good find!

I shoot and hunt with my 91,s-44,s and 53, years ago a local gun shop had a fire and good friend and I bought most of the water soaked boxes of bullets for a dollar or two and there was quite a few boxes of .311-.312 heavy bullets. we have been shooting them in .303 brit-7.62 mosin and 7.7 Japanese and load them down to a little over 30-30 speeds, you don,t need sun glasses or double ear muffs to enjoy your mosins. my near new Iranian fire breather and my near new polish 44.

9ADF319C-CF25-497A-9605-7A2F7F0390F2.jpeg Took it to the range this morning and it shot great at 100 yards. Most shots stayed in the 4” ring when I didn’t flinch like mad. Range Master said Jeff you never flinch, always a first time lol.
I had cleaned that barrel last night till it shined but this morning I found my bore brush and OMG at all the gunk that came out. When you ran a patch down the barrel it felt real gritty. After shooting it 20 times and cleaning it again the barrel was smooth as glass and very strong riffleing with a mirror finish. Think it’s a keeper.
