hey guys,

I have an AR with the delta ring and magpul MOE Handguard, barrel mounted front sight, etc. I’m not as big of a fan of the MOE as I used to be, and want to put a free float rail on the gun.

Simultaneously, I’m helping my girlfriend build an AR15, and she wants to assemble the whole upper as well as the lower. She also really likes the magpul Handguard, and since she’s the frugal one, she is 100% on board with just using the parts I’m taking off of my gun, for her build. Yes, I’ve thought about just buying a whole new upper for my rifle, and giving her the old upper that she likes, but she’s REALLY excited to assemble the entire gun, and has no interest in a pre assembled upper. The way I see it, I have 2 options:

1 - get the new rail and gas block for my rifle, save everything I’m taking off, and use it for Kayak-Lady’s rifle. If I go this route, how much of the old parts can be recycled? Is the delta ring going to be able to be put on a new upper, and the old gas block/front sight on a new barrel?

2 - would it be easier and possibly more cost effective to just buy another assembled upper from palmetto for my rifle, and then disassemble my old upper and let Kayak-Lady put it back together to get the full build experience? I feel like this is the more expensive and complicated option, but wanted to make sure.

Thanks for all the input!

Everything will be reusable with the exception possibly of the gas block/front sight base. On a lot of rifles the front sight base is pinned in place with two tapered pins. Most aftermarket barrels are not drilled to accept these pins, so you would either need to drill the pin holes, which would be almost impossible to do by hand, or you would need to get a clamp on front sight base.

If you want to put a slim free float tube on your rifle you are going to need to remove and replace the front sight base and barrel nut anyway, so what I would do if I were you is take the barrel and front sight base off of your rifle and put it on her upper. Then you can order a new barrel and free float forearm for your rifle and put it back together with the new parts.

Just leave the front sight base on the barrel of your existing rifle and let her use it to build her upper.

I have removed pinned front sight bases. It can be done and sometimes it just takes a few stout whacks with a good hammer, other times it is a torturous affair involving heat, cussing and tremendous amount of impacts.

I can confidently say that there is a roughly 40% chance you will regret it if you try to remove the FSB. Just get a new barrel for your upper and let her do the rest of the assembly of her upper with your old barrel. The other portions of assembling an upper are enjoyable if you like building things.

someguy2800 is correct that a pinned FSB can generally not be used on a different barrel unless you want to enlist the services of a gunsmith.

I had it done with an original Colt M16A1 FSB that came from one of those kits from SE Asia when I built my Colt 603 clone. I would never spend the time or money to do it on a practical rifle.
