I've had many handguns over the years and never thought I'd find one which I love as much as the Model 1911/Colt Government Model, but I think the M17 is at least a tie. I have been firing mostly Winchester Service Grade 115 grain (which, as far as I can tell is same-same M1152) and some Winchester 9mm NATO. That is one sweet pistol. 1,100 rounds so far without a single hiccup.

I haven't got to shoot one yet, as I retired before they came about, but people I know in the conventional army who have them really like them, and say that they are a huge improvement over the old M9 (not difficult to believe). We replaced our M9's with Glocks starting in '05, and never looked back. SOCOM decided to stay with the Glocks even after "big army" adopted the Sig.

Same. I was seeing Facebook pictures of my old soldiers cracking open M17s just a few months after I got out, as the 101st were the first unit to get them. Eventually I would like to get a 92FS for nostalgia. My issued M9 was in very good shape so I cannot hate on that one too much.

Which brigade?

I have several 1911's and while I like them for range use and appreciate the history I no longer consider them a top tier defensive weapon. They are as good, if not better than ever, but I'll take the newer designs every time.

I've had both the Sig 226 which has seen military service as well as Beretta 92. I appreciate the reliability and accuracy of the Beretta I just didn't like the gun well enough to keep. If someone issued me one I'd have complete confidence in it, but if I'm spending my money I'll go elsewhere.

I did like the 226 a lot better, but at the end of the day it didn't do anything a Glock wouldn't do as well.

The M17 however is different. I bought one as soon as they were available and like it much. Enough so that I'd like to get one of the compact M18's as well. A lot of folks will disagree, and I'm OK with that, but I like the 1911 style safety. Being used to 1911's it is just natural for me. And a big part of the appeal of the M17 compared to Glock is the much lighter, smoother trigger. Not having a safety on the Glock isn't a big deal, but I'd not feel nearly as comfortable carrying the civilian Sig 320 with no safety.

They do make the M17 in both black and FDE although the FDE version is the most common.

That's the aviation brigade, right? I was in 3/5 from 91-99.

The aviation unit of 101 is its own, unnumbered brigade. It is typically called CAB or combat aviation brigade. 3BCT are Rakkasans. The nickname from the 187th is shared with the whole brigade.

Ok, I remember when big army was changing to that system. So you were a Rakkasan? I went to pre-Ranger in '94 ran by that brigade before the division took it over.

If it doesn’t have M17 on the slide, then it’s just a P320. That M17 logo makes a world of difference. ;);)
I like my M17 a lot, but I’m still afraid to drop it. ;);)
