The cops in my state here are running rifle plates..... ***.... I mean the most anyone can dream of owning here is a bolt gun.

What gives....

Maybe due to massive non-compliance of illegal gun laws regarding MSR's down under. The same thing is happening in the leftest cesspool states over here.

The police know that they have nothing to fear from the law-abiding.

They also know that not everyone is among the law-abiding.

You know, just like over here. ;)

Yeah, I'm not seeing the point. If bolt guns are common and powerful, they are not trivial weapons. I've seen folks run bolt guns in carbine matches and if they skilled, they are not that slow as to be taken lightly.
Also, I've read that Australian guns are making some nasty homemade SMGs. Finally, MSRs - give you my take. That term is idiotic and the Australian case is a prime one for that opinion. The 2nd Amendment doesn't protect sports. Calling the gun a sports toy makes it easy to justify a ban. In Australia from past discussions, the gun community tried to protect their guns as they for 'sport'. Australian males are supposed to have a 'sport'. Thus, don't take away our manly sport - not an SD or defense against tyranny rationale. It flopped. Guns were banned

Gun folks in the USA, like the major gun periodicals and NSSF, have tried the same excuse - it's a toy, it's for sport. Won't work.

Plenty of high end expensive, 'sniper' rifles in use today that are bolt guns. If they feel they need the plates, that's their call. The ban on semis isn't really that relevant.

MSR=Military Style Rifle

I have to agree with GEM, calling it a modern sporting weapon assists their case. Also, to me calling it modern makes it sound new. I think alot of people forget this rifle has been available for 60+ years. It was available to civilians before the military even used it iirc.

Also, if I want protection against bolt action precision rifles I'm going Level III if I'm a LE.

I had a level three shock plate that went into a pocket on my personal body armor with the last vest I was issued - all those years ago. It did not provide protection against rifle rounds at all, but it did provide extra protection against just about most handgun rounds. More importantly it was designed to mitigate the impact to your torso from a solid strike, allowing you to react more quickly whether that meant going to cover or returning fire if possible.

Remember that laws or rules only apply to the law-abiding generally. Criminals or those that choose to disobey any law aren’t likely to comply with gun restrictions of any kind.

Every young (and not so young) officer is at risk when coming up to an armed law breaker. They deserve, and we need to provide them with, the best protection possible. That doesn’t mean that they’re comfortable to wear day in and day out. I knew more than one officer that simply couldn’t wear one down here in south Florida...

Uh... you can buy bolts and single shots can fire anything up to 20mm.

Sure, Australian cops carry Steyr AUGs... to someone standing off at a distance with a .300 Winchester Magnum, they might as well be unarmed.

It’s possible they purchased based on a legitimate threat assessment.

However, I think a more likely explanation has to do with “use it or lose it” budgeting if Aussie gov’t budgets are anything like those in the US.
