Hey guys, I recently ran into a old, fairly worn Remington Model 17 that I'd like to pick up for squirrel and rabbit hunting. Does anyone know the going rate for these old guns. The place is asking $200 which to me doesn't seem like an acceptable price given the gun's shape.

It's got a serial number in the 23xxx range with a permanent Polychoke and what seemed like a 26 inch ribless barrel. It's in what I would call fair condition, maybe the low end of fair. Pretty boogered up carrier screws of which I've already found a $40 replacement. Stock has a small crack near the trigger guard that seems easily repairable. The buttpad is absolutely shredded and will certainly need to be replaced. Some blueing wear all over and considerable blueing wear under the slide. Based on the wear under the slide I have a feeling this thing was shot quite a bit, maybe even used for trap shooting. It's got a patch of some rust forming on the receiver that might hold some pitting, but I couldn't see any pitting elsewhere.

I was wondering if these guns have any known issues. I haven't been able to find much info on the Model 17, but supposedly they're know for occasionally splitting their stocks at the wrist like the one I'm looking at. Parts seem to be uncommon so I'd rather know upfront what kind of problems these things have before I buy someone else's problems.

The blueing and wood is in similar shape as this Model 17. The wood might be in slightly worse shape than the one in the link.

Thanks for the help y'all

Good lord at $200 it would already be in my car.

that’s a classic old pump gun that inspired the Ithaca Model 37. The 17 only came in 20 gauge and would be perfect for what you describe.

go back and get it before someone else does. If the bore is good most everything else can be fixed. Parts can be had at numrich or off of ebay.

I have a 17 I got for xmas (passed down) in 1977. I used it for years dove hunting until I switched to a 12 gauge in my late teens. Its a great shotgun, I never had any problems with it. It has been in dad's attic for years- I should get it next time I'm there.
