Just had an interesting experience. Took my sister to the range, she has been interested in getting a handgun since all the craziness this year. They want a handgun for home defense. I went over to their place last week and brought a revolver and a couple of autoloaders to go over safety, controls, and general familiarization. So today I had her and her husband out to the range. Just have to stop here for a second. My sister, who up until this year, never wanted to have anything to do with guns, asked me to take her to the range. The pigs have indeed grown wings.... But I digress, she did very well with the Ruger Security Six with 38's, pretty good with my dad's SR9 and not too shabby with my CZ75 SP01. Not so well with the 1911. She also tried an LC9 an SR9C. Didn't care for the compacts so much. So she wants a full size 9mm, and wants one soon. And we narrowed it down to the obligatory polymer frame, striker fired variety. The supply being what it is, the selection was limited, there was a Stoger ST9, Taurus G3, FN509 tactical, CZp10 and a S&W m&p 9 2.0. I suggested the s&w of what was available. I figured it has a better track record than Stoger or Taurus, none of the extras of the FN tactical and a handier package for smaller hands than the CZ. So my question, who has some experience with the full size M&P? How do like it?

I just purchased an M&P 9 2.0 a couple days ago but haven't taken it to the range yet but will this week. I had a Beretta M9 and it is an excellent high capacity handgun but the ergonomics didn't work for me. I looked at and fondled the Glock 17, the S&W M&P 9 compact and a few other brands and ended up selecting the full size M&P 9 2.0. I owned an early Shield in 9mm and it and I worked together very well. The feel of the M&P 9 is similar to the Shield so believe I will be able to shoot it accurately. I'll post a review of my range experience once I shoot the gun. The Glock 17 was close runner up but I just don't like the feel of Glocks, good guns but I have to like how it fits my hand.

Not the full size or a 9 but I have the M&P 2.0 40 Compact. I like it a lot. I like the trigger & the ergonomics. I honestly don't get to shoot as much as I would like so I don't have a huge amount of rounds through it but I haven't had any issues (failures) so far. It comes with 4 interchangeable backstraps so something should work with her hand size.

I've owned both a full size and compact M&P 2.0. I also had a 9mm and 45 in the original M&P. I could never come around to the original, but I liked the 2.0 versions quite a bit. Everyone has an opinion, but the M&P is one of the few plastic striker fired guns with a 1911 style safety available. For me this was a big selling point.

I have no issue with my Glocks or other striker fired gun with no safety as long as it is carried in a good holster. But there are times, such as night stand or glove box duty where it is best not to be in a holster. For that I like the option of having a safety.

I ended up giving both of mine to my son and daughter. They aren't nearly as much into shooting as me and for them I especially felt better having the safety. While I did like them quite well I already had more guns than I needed.

I have a full size 5” 9mm CORE but not a gen 2.0 yet. I would like one. My 9L has 12,000+ rounds through it and is one of my favorite pistols. I have been hesitant to get a 2.0 because I understand the 1.0 trigger system and how to upgrade it, and I like that the slide auto forwards when you slam home a full mag. The 2.0 slide catch has a detent to prevent this from happening and I understand the trigger bar/sear interface is different. I’ll probably still end up with one though. The ergos are great for me and mine is a shooter and has proven very reliable in tough hot dusty match conditions.

I have a M&P 2 4" Compact. Excellent pistol with great ergonomics and 100% reliable. I also have a few first generation M&Ps, also 100% reliable.

We have the M&P9 2.0 with 5 inch barrel and night sights. It was picked out by my wife after many trips to the range trying various guns. It is a very nice gun, just feels good to shoot. We bought the spec kit version that includes a knife and medallion because it was actually cheaper than the standard version with 4 1/4 inch barrel and standard sights. I don't think you would be disappointed in it.

I don't have a full size M&P but I do have the 2.0 Compact 9 which is pretty much the same gun with a 4" barrel. It's my EDC and I would highly recommend it. Very accurate and reliable.

Mine is a good shooter. It goes bang every time. I like the trigger and sights. It fits my hand well.

I like all 3 of my Smiths, in 9mm I believe the 2.0 4” Compact is the winner. With S&W creative pricing I got a good deal on a gun I could easily carry the rest of my time on this earth.

I had intended on writing about my experience with my new M&P9 but when I was checking it out for function I found out the slide would not go fully into battery while loading a round. Discovered that the extractor will not slide over the rim on the round and that keeps it from going into battery. Spoke with S&W and they emailed a shipping label so off it went today for repair. Kinda bummed out, really wanted to shoot it and who know how long it will take for it to come back.

Thank you for all the replies, sounds very positive. Except for @George Dickel , that's a bummer. Well they bought it and are waiting the 5 days, so hopefully we'll get out this weekend and break it in:)
I love new gun day....even if it's not mine:D

I’ve had a M&P 45 for a while and really enjoy it. I bought a M&P 9 about five years ago and have been very happy with it.when the M&P 9 M2.0 came out in FDE and 5” barrel, I decided I wanted one.
I wanted one without the manual safety and got it in May. I really like this gun.
Here’s a link to the post I did on it.

Bought my MP9 5" about a month and a half ago and to this point have found it to be a great shooter. I got the manual safety on mine and have found that useful. Like the grip a lot-real comfortable for me. I don't have a great deal of experience with autos but I like this one.

I have a 5” and a 4” compact. I highly recommend them. They M&P 2.0s feel great and shoot well.

I’d suggest OP and his wife get one and practice with it. It’s important to get used to it and feel comfortable with it. With the great feel anyone who has shot before it’ll be easy. For a newbie it’s vital to practice good form which will also come quickly.
