New .22 rifle daydreams

Mr. rkittine, thanks for sending pics of your beautiful rifle, would be nice to see more of it. I know what you mean by pricey rimfire ammo. There is an active club in SW Va that has several popular RF bench matches each year (60 benches). I don't shoot there but I know several of the shooters and like to watch. During the major events ammo dealers and other specialists set up shop there so I go to buy top quality ammo for my silhouette competitions and for testing other RF rifles. Thanks again for pics.
PS, have you tried, or use, the Flavio Fare triggers? Most of the RF shooters I know have now abandoned Jewell triggers and now use the Flavio. I also did away with the Jewell triggers on my centerfire rifles and replaced them with B&A triggers.

Does it have to be new? Nothing wrong with looking at vintage firearms. My 1960's Marlin and Glenfield Model 60's are quite accurate if you prefer autos. My 1961 Marlin Model 81DL or 1940-something Springfield Model 86C can put them where you want them.
However, if someday you have a hankering for .22 magnum, look at the Mossberg 640 "Chuckster". My, my...I have two of these and that should be against the law. Same mechanism in .22LR would be the Model 340. I've never fired one, but if it's anywhere near as accurate as the 640, you would probably find a life-long friend.
My point is...don't rule out these older rimfires. Many are surprisingly accurate as well as affordable. You may have to look harder, but I believe they're worth the effort.

View attachment 925229 I have enjoyed long range RF now for a while. With CCI Standard Velocity Ammo my ECK will hold maybe 10" at 200 yards. All the equipment makes a difference, keeping the barrel cool for consistency, the rest, especially the rear bag etc. I have a lot on my bench when I shoot.

Keep in mind that some of the match ammo is pretty pricey at least compared to the cost or reloading compared to regular RF.
Outstanding post.
I love good ol competition!

No I wouldn't necessarily insist on new, but my lgs had pretty much what I had in mind.
I have my grandfather's excellent Remington 550-1 that will run shorts, long, and long rifle. It is an excellent shooter. I wanted something different.

I'm really enjoy the peek into rimfire competition that you have shown in your posts, thanks for posting.
Keep 'em coming!

Magnum research does a pretty good semi auto as well as Volquartsen. In bolt action I wood try Vuduu rifles. Hill country custom rifles does beautiful work but $$$$. I built my own from a 10/22 and this works great and shoots bug holes . I mainly use it at 200 yards and farther with the scope I have mounted.

ms6852, what type of scope base are you using to get to 200+
The scope base is just a regular flat base made for the ruger receiver. The rings are a little high but was leftover stuff from several years ago and dreadfully do not remember the information you asked for. But it is not a 20 or 30 moa.

What I do for me when I mount a scope on a 22lr rifle I always buy the scope with the following criteria. First it must have an adjustable objective or parallel adjustment. Secondly the scope should have a minimum of 75 but prefer 80 moa of elevation adjustment, this allows you at least 35 to 40 moa of adjustment for longer ranges. And lastly I want a scope that at a minimum has a BDC reticle but prefer a mil-dot or moa reticle that allows for sub tensions . This particular scope has an additional 30 moa of sub tensions built into the reticle. It is 84 moa or 24.4 mil. So half the moa of 84 is 42 plus the 30 moa of sub tensions gets me 72 moa of elevation adjustment which is more than necessary for 3 to 400 yards.

I just returned from a rifle range trip shooting my new Bergara BXR semi-auto 22LR. See link below: It meets all of your criteria and then some. Often called a 10/22 clone, it surpasses the 10/22 right out of the box. Superb barrel, great trigger and the best composite stock I've ever handled. No need for upgrades. I bought the carbon fiber barrel model which is $100 more than the fluted steel model. Both are very accurate, but the carbon fiber model is lighter. I've owned 10/22 and believe me, the BXR is better. I put a Tract 22Fire 4-12X scope on it, which is a fantastic scope and a bargain for the quality. Today is the second day I tried different ammo to see what it likes. Was delighted to learn that it likes Federal AutoMatch better than Eley Contact.....weird, eh? To be fair, the Eley was accurate, but wouldn't cycle. The Federal AutoMatch was equally accurate, cycles every time and is cheap to boot! Next will be some 100yd shooting. Can't say enough good things about this rifle and the Tract scope too.

Can you show some groups using the Federal Auto match, I can’t find any that is consistent. One group good then the next group all over the place.

ms6852, thanks for the info. I run a 20moa base on one of my 10/22's. That lets me get to 230yds with a 1/2 turn left on the up turret.

This was my .22 “gotta have it” rifle ... along with the Ruger 10” MK IV this 10/22 International stainless was a recent purchase from Buds. I also put a Simmons silver finished scope on it.

I love the Ruger take on the Mannlicher stock; the barrel is the right length to make a smooth transition from the belly (by the magazine) to the end of the stock, plus the slight Schnabel curve to the steel nose piece just makes it look nice.

I wish I had a big field like you do AF, that’s really nice! :)

Stay safe.

@Riomouse911
That is a great looking Ruger. I like that mannlicher/ stainless look.

The treeline on the far horizon is our beloved North Fork river(small river)......our property runs another ¼ mile beyond the farthest treeline that can bee seen in the pic.

We all went to watch the little Lab pup do her thing retrieving in the water. She did good, she has it in her blood. #1 drove all the way to Jonesboro, ARK to get her. 20200625_190104.jpg

The Rest is a SEB NEO. Usually the back order time is about 9 months. Price wise, with the F Class Feet Option and the counterweights (not shown, they attach to the rod sticking out in the one picture), the rest is about $1,380.00 delivered.

Nice! Looks like your son picked a winner .

We have an aging Pointer who will point at stuff when she’s out and about, but she was an abused/abandoned pup and is afraid of gunfire so she never did hunt.

Man I wish our family still had the ranch that my Grandparents owned in the Hill Country. Between unrest, Corona or just to have a place of our own to shoot or hunt, having enough acreage to retreat and escape is a wonderful thing!

Stay safe.

For you guys that have stepped up your accuracy beyond plinker and into hunter/target shooter territory....what ammo are you buying? My usual 'go to' for more serious shooting is CCI minimags.
What are you guys using that's not super expensive, but still consistent.?

I have found some of the Lapua and Eley lower priced products are accurate. Eley Club etc.
For me I really do not buy the top tier stuff like RWS, eley, or Lapua. I specifically only shoot 2 brands of ammo that I stock up on. I stock up on CCI and Aguila and have found Aguila hyper velocity rounds to be extremely accurate at 230 yards where I am able to make consecutive hits on a 4" clay target than pick off the fragments. I know that most people will say to shoot subsonic rounds but in my range we have a swirling wind all the time and for me I feel that the longer the bullet stays in flight the longer it will be affected by the swirling wind, and I don't really see the transonic stage taking affect at that distance or further.

On occasion that I shoot for 10 shot groups. I only shoot wolf match ammo or target ammo as that is what I have stocked up too. I also love to glue paint balls to a poster board and shoot them at 50 and 100 yards and for that I use cci or aguila which is pretty accurate for me. Over the years I try to stick to one bullet weight as that way I can easily remember my adjustments from memory through repetition. I try to shoot only 40 grainers.

For shooting steel reactive targets to 230 yds I shoot CCI Mini mags for knock down power.
For NRA Silhouette to 100m Wolf Match or SK+
For score punching if not too serious CCI Std, if more serious Wolf Match or SK+
For indoor 4 position at 50ft Wolf Match or SK+

Can you show some groups using the Federal Auto match, I can’t find any that is consistent. One group good then the next group all over the place.
Just saw this request. I don't photograph groups.. I just shoot, collect my targets, and make measurements. I used to shoot 3-5 shot groups and compare ammo. Now I shoot 10 shot groups and measure the width of the whole group. So I try not to think much about minute differences. I only compete against myself and the elements. The Federal AutoMatch has been mostly consistent; so faar better than 7-8 other ammo brands. I just bought 3 boxes and will resume shooting soon. Unfortunately I had to send my BXR back because it was jamming. You see my goal is to build a good accurate rifle that runs cleanly for general use. I hunt squirrels, shoot prairie dogs, and plink small objects like empty shotguns shell hulls at 100 yds. I plans to order some RK semi-auto ammo and RWS semi-auto. Hoping that one of these will be a little better than the AutoMatch. But, if not, I can live with it.
