Where does .40s&w fit in for a carry gun??

How about, if you want 9mm but ZERO available at Cabelas?
"Sorry, sir. We only have 40 s&w" says pimple-faced employee Tyler.
"Aight..Ive got a Glock 23 or Sig P226 so we're good!"

Or you could have been stocking up on 9 mm for the last 4 years when it was relatively cheap and plentiful. Then you wouldn't have to worry about what was available at Cabela's

Actually I reload and have several flavors of caliber guns and practice ammo. I believe in shooting what you carry, and I do. It ran out. I guess I'm not as proficient at hoarding as you..and hopefully not as bitter and unpleasant.

That’s only relevant if you have time travel. Either a person stocked up, or they didn’t, and it cannot be changed now. Either way, there are reasonable reasons they might want to buy more ammo now or in the future.

I'm not sure what to tell you there partner.

Welcome to the July "hate on 40" thread!

It's the same, tired old arguments that you remember! Just repackaged in a new thread! All under the guise of:
I DO NOT want to start a caliber war.

Which was the whole point.

I may have to seriously consider making a flowchart of the basic 9/40/45 argument just for the opportunity to post it every time one of these comes up.

FWIW Billy The Kid mostly carried a .41 Colt Thunderer.

From that information I can extrapolate where he would come down on this argument.

Have been flirting w/ the idea of a .40 revolver... as the ammo is already stacked high and deep.

That makes sense. A friend of mine recently posted on F-book that he wanted to get into a new platform & caliber. I told him that didn't make sense to me in the middle of the current insanity.

I’m looking at a new .40 but I can’t decide between a M&P40C and a Shield40.

Normally I wouldn’t consider a.40 as small as a Shield but there’s a performance center ported with a 4” barrel that’s peaked my interest.

Would think that the M&P40C would be the way to go, as long as the size works.

Like the compact G23.4 a lot.

A ported Shield would probably be a little under-powered and loud to shoot.

Get what you like.

I used to love it b
I might have to kill it...

However I do often find myself carrying my Ruger sr40c which by far is the best bang for a buck in a 40 caliber carry gun they're super accurate and very compact for the capacity and Power.

That said I am shifting to 10 mm and 9 mm and 357 revolvers

I have a M&P9C that I really like so one in .40 would be a natural fit, then next year I’ll pick up a G23.5 :)

I picked the Charter Pitbull 40 S&W used local .. it had been riding in a fellars car between seat and console... It was nasty .. dirty .. other than a milsurp it was the curdiest firearm Id ever purchased.. I almost turned it down until I checked lockup and trigger ... great trigger .. tight as a drum lock-up ...
It cleaned up good .. shoots great ... I only shoot 180gr 40 S&W

I am hopeful that the Gen 5 Glock 40's adopt the thicker slide of the Brazilian contract guns. I am getting ready to move to a more rural area that is Open Carry and CCW friendly. I wouldn't mind having a Glock 22 for this role. I mostly shoot my 9's, but still flirt with the 40 from time to time. The 40 reminds of the old 38/40, which worked well in days of old and still does today.

Why would we only want to be limited to a single caliber?

My Oh My....I had no idea.

I really didn't want to begin a caliber war. Honestly. I was trying to figure out if it made sense to spend the money for another carry gun besides 9 and 45. I figured a couple of folks would venture and opinion and help me to a decision.

But 7 pages of responses?

I've been busy with some writing assignments and hadn't been back here in a couple of days. So was surprised at the volume of responses. I will be reading all of them over the next day or so.

And to finish the story...I went from no .40s to 5 in almost no time. Guy asked me to trade one thing for his M&P full size with an Apex, found a very good deal at my LGS before all the covid for a Beretta 96 Centurion. I was selling four guns I wasn't shooting at all and the buyer had a .40 HiPower that was a straight across trade with one of the 4. And someone over on the S&W forum offered me a 4006TSW CHP I wanted to memorialize my best friend, a retired CHiP. And then, of all things, someone heard I had a Beretta 92compact and asked if I wanted a PX4 compact in 40 for it.

I figured what the heck, I might as well do the trade. I wasn't shooting or carrying the Beretta and I might as well have a carry gun in .40. It will probably end up in Langdon for a workover....and I thank everyone who offered their thoughts. Who woulda thunk?

I like 40.
I'd really like if the term "caliber war" (no such thing) was replaced with "caliber discussion". Please.

I don't consider 45 ACP to be a serious carry gun to consider.
I know I will never sell my 40 cal Ruger sr40c and even though I have many other options I often carry it due to its compact size capacity and power and accuracy
I also have a 40 cal Springfield XDM and I must say I love Springfield XD ms for reliability. Just got a 10 mm OSP threaded variation
I'll never probably get rid of that Springfield XDM 40 cal either as I have about 15 mags for it ammo is always available relatively cheap for its capability and I have two barrels including a threat at 1 for it.
That's sad I'll more likely carrying 9 mm or 3:57 or 10 mm.
My primary Carey now is a Glock 20 SF with night sights

The more I see'em, the more I like'em.

The .40/180 gr. is a workhorse pistol round.

It's just that the CA Pitbull-.40 is one of those "...like another hole in my head" things for me.

But the list is short, and it's right up at the top. (along with a SA Saint Victor in .308 or 6.5mm CM)

:D

I don't fit anything into a "carry rotation".

I have several I can carry, but the only "rotation" that comes is strictly due to circumstances. Such as when my dress code won't allow for my routine carry, or if my routine carry is unavailable for some reason.

That said... you want a .40, buy a .40.

No other justification required!

Well like has been mentioned the nine is as good as the 40 with the correct ammo. Key words correct ammo. In today's ammo market that may not be a sure thing. How many times have ammo shelves been empty since Bill was president ? Having a 40 might be a good hedge . Also most fmj 40s would work better than same in 9 mm due to the way the bullet is made to fit the the 9 mm size guns. Just a thought

Well said. (Then again I like all guns.)
