What should I do if my Mosin Nagant has a rusty bolt assembly.

My Mosin is in great condition besides the bolt assembly. Is it worth buying a new one somewhere or is there something I can try at home to fix it?

a new one might cause headspace issues - better to clean your old one.
try soaking it in penetrating oil.

I don`t know if you`ve fired it yet and if you haven`t, check for a serial # on the bolt and try to ascertain whether it`s original to the rifle (I don`t know if Mosin`s are serial numbered like most other rifles though). If so, and it is numbered like the rest then you should be good to go.

From the pics, it appears that only the bolt is rusted up with the rest of the receiver being rust-free. That, in itself, would make me look closer at the bolt. Could be another bolt having been put in the rifle to replace the original, leaving a possible headspace issue.

Just saying...

The rust is no issue with your bolt, I am glad you got that taken care of.
All Mosin’s are serialed, rearsenaled rifles will have been brought to spec and serials made to match.
The 7.62x54r is a rimmed cartridge, with the headspace being set on the rim and not the cartridge shoulders, like a 30-06 and others,......you can easily disassemble the body from the head and replace the body while retaining the bolts head and the same headspace.
Fact is, you can swap out the whole bolt, body, bolt head and all, and not have too many worries, as the bolts head bears the rims headspace and the chambers pressures, and rim thickness is fairly consistent, like the bullet diameters are when manufactured.

I’ll be betting the bolt was stored separately from the rifle, and some rust developed.

Got pics of the barrels chamber end? That would tell you a lot more about what you have.

I totally agree with sweat rusting things, the first metals on my Mosin’s to darken/discolor are where I work the action.

The Russians kept the bolts in the white to gauge how therest of the rifle was being taken care of, from what I’ve read, a 19th century practice
