I am in the market for a field/hunting holster for a new Ruger Blackhawk 7.5” in .45 Colt (this model). I’ve poked around the googles, but thought I would ask for suggestions here.

My basic requirements are:

1) Leather
2) Active retention (strap, hammer thong, or even full flap - hiking protection more important than fast draw)
3) Can be worn crossdraw (I anticipate this is the only way I will carry this gun)
4) Does not need to account for an optic, as I have no plans of ever mounting a scope.

At first, I was leaning toward a simple Galco SAO holster (link), but I’ve read a number of reviews stating that the 7.5” Blackhawk muzzle sticks out of the bottom of the holster about 1/8” to 1/4”. This gives me concerns about crown damage in the field, so I am shying away from that.

In the past, I Simply Rugged has been my go-to for holsters. I have a number of Sourdough Pancakes from them for some other revolvers, but experience tells me that a pancake holster would not carry very comfortably with a barrel this long. Right now, I am leaning toward their Cattleman holster in a cross draw format.

Does anyone have any other recommendations? What’s your favorite field holster for a long-barreled revolver like this?

Thanks!

Simply Rugged makes a few other holster styles and offers retention options. I have a Cattleman made for crossdraw. Very comfortable for me. No retention on mine, but I believe it may be an option. I'd also guess they may make you something somewhat custom based off a current design, if you ask for it.

Yes, my current leaning is to get a Cattleman with a hammer thong (which they offer as an add-on).

Overall, I’ve been very happy with Simply Rugged. Probably too happy. In fact, aside from my pocket gun, every handgun that I own and actually carry has a Simply Rugged Holster.

I figure before I order another one, this may be a good opportunity to broaden my horizons and see if there are other options I should consider that I haven’t thought about.

Thanks!

Triple K Sportsman full flap.

You can also have any local custom leather guy do a full flap.

I just carried my .45 Colt 7.5" stainless on a family camping trip last month in the full flap my Dad made for my Crossman 1377 when I was 12- 32 years ago and still fully serviceable.

I have a left hand Simply Rugged for a 7.5" Blackhawk that I don't need any more. Doesn't have retention, unless you count the fact that most of the revolver is covered. Like I said, it is left hand, and I would be wiling to let it go cheap.

Which holster is it, exactly, and could you share any pictures? I may be interested. Thanks!

I think I'll pass, but thank you. I don't think the Sourdough with that barrel length would agree with my build type. :)

Cap and ball guns are notoriously long. I used a holster for a cap and ball gun (generic but large) for my 9.5” single six for a long while. It was not a perfect fit by any stretch, but it was good enough that the gun was held firm and the full flap retention kept it dry in the monsoon that I accidentally ended up in.

I made this one for a retired. marine corps colonel. he has i six and a half inch Ruger Blackhawk. It can be made cross draw and up scaled to a Super Blackhawk.

I’ve owned and used the Galco SAO holster for my 7.5” SBH for several years, and although the muzzle does stick out a tad, I’ve never had an issue with muzzle dings.

I also have a Triple K holster which completely covers the muzzle. It is cheaper than the SAO, but is still a very good holster.

Very nice! I just inherited a blackhawk from my father-in-law. He was right handed so looking for something other than what it is in now

A Simply Rugged Sourdough Pancake.

They’ve gone up in price over the years, but top quality. Keeps the gun snug against the body to reduce fatigue whilst carrying it about as well as able to be worn at a crossdraw. Best, they can be made with a retention strap with a long tail. You can “chop” upwards and disengage the snap to quickly grab the piece to place it into action with rapidity.

I carry my flattop blackhawk 44 special 4 5/8" kn a sourdough pancake. I do both OWB and IWB. Excellent quality. And more comfortable than I was expecting it to be. My blackhawk carries IWB as comfortable as my 1911 does in a ritchie hideaway IWB!
