I've got a new addition coming soonish and I'm looking for holster suggestions for it. A Ruger Blackhawk with a 4-5/8" barrel.

I've got a number of pancake holster from Simply Rugged for my wheelguns, and I've always had good results with them. But for this one, I'm looking for a slightly lower ride, though still on a regular belt as apposed to the western style separate gun belt. I'd still like it be concealable under a long coat, though I'm not specifically search for a concealment holster.

One big thing is that I'd like it to be comfortable. I'm sure many of you are familiar with holsters that cause the gun to dig into your hip a little. I'd like to avoid that. The Simply Rugged Cattleman's holster is an example of one that does this to me.

Any thoughts?

Does it dig into you standing, sitting, or both?

I have only carried Single action revolvers with dedicated belt rigs but I have recently had a hankering for a Threeperson's style holster.

If you can get on one of their lists Graveyard Jack and Red Cent leather make some NICE rigs.

I was thinking about picking one up from El Paso Saddlery. I have two pretty nice holsters from them already.

I'm building one for myself, I'm sure you're gonna get plenty of responses.
Best wishes....I like my pancake Roy's Original. 20160907_083856.jpg
Shown here with my single six...but my 4 5/8 blackhawk fits too.

Is it digging into your hip, as in the belt 's making a pressure point against your hip, or digging into your thigh, as in the muzzle is pressing in below the belt? If a Cattleman is digging into your thigh, you likely have a belt problem, not just a holster problem. A guy can shim behind the belt, against the holster body, under the loop, to tip the muzzle away from the leg.

It's behind my belt, right where the holster loop sits. I usual wear a wilderness belt which is pretty stiff. I think it may, in part, be due to the relatively narrow loop on the holster creating a smaller surface area than the pancake holsters... if that makes sense. So what I'm thinking is I need the holster to support the gun's weight farther out on the belt to each side than the Cattleman allows.

Perhaps a "Mexican loop" style would distribute the weight over a larger area.
