I tried a new range today. They had tons of every ammo you can think of. The other range I was going to has ammo, but just to shoot there. My new range sells as much as you want out the door. I was quoted $450 for 1000 Federal 9mm. Expensive, but they have tons.

I was about to say that's pretty high, but I just looked on ammoseek.com, that's a decent price for now. Glad I reload my own.

As many "try" to tell all when there is a panic shortage. The people who make ammo did not shut down. Stuff is coming out the doors daily at the factory. The reason this range has it is the price. Some will buy it but not many. As with all shortages the stuff is always there for a price. For range price that's not too bad. Most I have ever been to are not known as a great price place. If they keep it at that price at least new shooters who buy a gun will be able to shoot. Sooner or later places and people piling the ammo will have to stop as they have too much. Then the pipe line starts to fill. That range mentioned could sell the stuff at half that price and still make money but it would be gone in hours. So then anyone with a new gun who goes will see no ammo.

You could almost buy the reloading equipment and components to reload 500-1000 rounds of 9mm for $450.

Not at the moment. You could have done so months ago when loaded ammo was 14-16 cents per round. But you are more likely to find loaded ammo now than loading components at any price.

At least this is keeping the the scalpers at bay. During previous shortages a handful of guys were buying the ammo at the same prices and selling them at inflated prices.

If you could find primers .........
How true. I have components to put together several thousand rounds of the pistol calibers I shoot. I’m just loading a few hundred at a time of what I want to shoot, thinking it may be a while before I can restock. Brass, enough forever, bullets. Plenty of lead, powder more than I could use in years, primers, my Achilles heel. :(
Even my black powder Plenty of lead and powder, Caps, I’m down to a thousand. No spark no boom.

$.45 per round ain’t too bad today. Cheapest steel cased stuff on ammoseek is $.54. I’m not buying any at that price, but it’s better to have jacked up prices when the other option is completely bare shelves.

if buying components to reload, expect to be spending close to $.20 per primer...

That's more than double what it was a few months ago, and I wouldn't buy any at this price because I don't need any, but if I was a new shooter with a new gun I wouldn't find it cost prohibitive to buy a few boxes to tide me over.

The OPs point was that he was able to find ammo and purchase it with no limitations. That is good. Yes the price was high, and yes if one reloads, it is significantly cheaper..... But it always has been cheaper to reload.

as Alex Clayton described above, supply and demand works and if allowed to continue will eventually normalize availability.

As far as primer go, that's another story. It's almost easier to find a unicorn. Someone mentioned in another forum on this site that a single entity is running the market and posting primers for sale at Gunbroker for RIDICULOUS prices. I was trying to long a URL to this, but those comments that included the name of the entity selling primers at high prices was removed. I don't fault them as the forum was "Where are the reloading components on sale," I just wish they would have left the name of the offending entity in the forum so users on this site could steer clear of them. Price gouging, creates availability issues that remain for longer periods of time. Especially to warn new shooters and reloaders.

Overall the OPs post hopefully provides a glimmer of hope that this shortage is starting to slowly end. Now if we could see that on the Primers, that would be great.

....and the expensive part is why they have tons. Just having ammo at all will be a big draw for some folks. Last .22 shortage, local small town gunsmith/shop had a huge sign in their window...."WE HAVE .22 AMMO!". Yep, sure did, $9 for a box of 50. Looked like it had been stored in a wet basement. Still....made me stop, even tho I didn't buy any. While I was there, another guy came in, grumbled about the price and bought two boxes. Said he drove 30 miles to get there.

And yet, four days ago, I picked up another case of 150 grain Syntech 9mm for $230. Normal pricing is available if you make the effort- not everyone is gouging. $450 for a case of range 9 IS PRICE GOUGING. And it won’t stop unless we stop patronizing the gougers.

The flintlock guys are laughing at us right now, and rightly so. A flintlock blunderbus is extremely scarcity-proof.

All the LGS's in my area are out of 9MM & 22LR. If they get any in at all it's only sold when a firearm is purchased. The range that I'm a member at still has 22LR bricks for sale at $40. Can only buy 9MM to shoot and are limited to 2 boxes of 50. Price is $30 a box.

30 dollars a box for members, wow. Wonder how much it is for non-members...... The range I'm a member of limits a member to two bricks for 9mm, but at 14.00 a box for 9mm.

Just came home from the local indoor range. Didn't shop ammo as I was shooting my handloads.
Shot 50 .45 Colts, 100 .38 Specials and 100 .45ACP's. Not rubbing it in but that's a $150 dollar day at those prices, wow. :(
