I haven't bought anything gun-related since the coronavirus started, but this week I did.
I decided to equip each of my Ruger Mark I -- II -- III -- IV pistols with 3 contemporaneous OEM magazines. (I lacked one for the Mark I and one for the Mark II.)
For the Mark I, the dilemma was whether to get the type with the follower button only on the right side (works only with the A54 frame), or get the later type with the button that can be switched from side to side (works with either the A54 or the A100 frame). (My gun has the early A54 frame, and I already had one of each type of magazine.) I found both types on ebay, but settled on the second type. It's costing me $78 total. This is the 9-shot magazine with the zigzag follower spring and permanently attached chromed baseplate with no logo.
For the Mark II, Ruger is still making OEM magazines. But they come with the current all-black baseplate and knurled follower button. I had some extra domed follower buttons, and baseplates with the silver logo on a red background. My vintage of Mark II uses a silver logo on a black background. Fortunately I was able to find a source for the silver/black medallions on ebay. So, this part of the project is costing me $27 for the new magazine and $13 for a pair of silver/black medallions, or a total of $40. (The earlier Mark II and III baseplates have removable medallions, the same as the ones used on the grips. The current all-black baseplates are one piece.)
Trivial and nit-picking, sure. But this is the collector mentality.
