Stopped into my local Walmart yesterday (Kansas) and asked the sales clerk if she had any 10/22's in stock. She looked, and then said, "no, and I don't think we can order any. We're not carrying any Ruger's of any kind anymore." The guns on display were almost all Savage, a few Marlins and Mossbergs.

Anyone know if it's just this store or have Walmart and Ruger had a falling out?

Walmart in general is getting completely out of the gun market. The closest Walmart to me just had a firesale of all remaining inventory. Not sure about all stores but they didnt carry handgun or 223 at that location at the time. Havent been back since.

I was at a wm in Norwich NY yesterday, customer asked about 10 22-'s. Counter guy said that ruger wasn't up and running so they couldn't get them. I don't know if that's the case or not. Seems to me that ruger should be manufacturing rifles do there is likely a better explanation.

I saw an article that said Ruger is way behind on orders. It could be partially true.

I got Ruger on the phone a few weeks ago asking about getting my Vaquero fitted with a spare cylinder in .45acp. They said repairs had a much longer than expected turn around due to parts being unavailable, and they were only taking repair work, not doing any special stuff.

So that all jives with "shutdown"

Walmart contacts manufacturers and tells them how much they will pay for their products. Lots of companies won't do business with Walmart directly, Hornady won't. Individual Walmarts can purchase those items from wholesalers indirectly just like any other gun store. But they don't get the bulk discounts like they do when going straight to the manufacturer.

It wouldn't surprise me to see Ruger stop dealing with Walmart. At least in the short term. Why would they sell to Walmart when they can sell everything they make to others at higher prices than Walmart will pay.

Walmart stopped selling handgun and 223, 7.62X39 ammo in September of 2019 after a shooting in a Walmart store in Texas.

I go to Walmart very rarely, but the last time I was there (6-ish months ago) they had a 10/22 on clearance. Wouldn’t surprise me if Walmart we’re dropping it, but it also wouldn’t surprise me if the SKU number had just changed.

I have long since made the summation that if money is the root of all evil, then Walmart is the square root of all evil. They come in and shut down the local shops and drag money to Bentonville instead of leaving it locally, pay at their stores is lower than what many local shops would do, and they only sell what they see as important globally instead of selling what makes sense locally. Guns are a topic that I don’t understand Walmart’s stance. If they would do something akin to Rural King’s online deal where it gets delivered to a local store then they would sell more and make more money but they seem to be taking a political stance that alienates some customers, especially in rural areas. It seems as if the big city folks shop at Costco, Target, etc so why alienate their true base? Seems dumb, but I’m sure there’s much more to the story.

Wally World ain't nuthin' compared to that river in Brazil that keeps building distribution centers and hiring more drivers under contract to bring schtuff to people's homes.

That ones only getting worse. Knowing people who work there, I would say that that Amazin company gets what they pay for. Electronically picked orders, very little actual work, lots of time to mess around. I find it somewhat odd though that they keep sinking millions into distribution centers and looking forwards to direct from manufacture delivery (we already see that on big items) I wonder how soon the real estate will be worth more than the business... looking at Sears and Kmart as examples of what to not do.

I don't know. If I have to stop in Wal-Mart, which seems to happen about once a week, I always go back and see if they have any of those $100 rifles clearanced out. I also check to see if they happen to have any of the Federal AutoMatch .22 ammo (it's been known to happen)
Last time I inquired about their rifle selection a couple months ago, I was told they could order just about any brand bolt rifle or shotgun I wanted. Not sure how, but that's what the man said.

WestKentucky:
Walmart really exploited the anxious situations after 9/11.
My crew was in a shuttle to a hotel not far from the airport, several months after the attacks.

The driver claimed that WalMart had ordered that every foreign supplier must Open an office in the Bentonville/Fayetteville area.
Walmart squeezes every business in every possible manner.

At least one or two AR-15s were stolen from the locked, clear display case :scrutiny: (after midnight) in a local Walmart a few years ago; Cordova/Memphis. The store still sells ammo but no longer sells guns nor want to risk the liability.

Couldnt care less. Havent been in one since March, and hopefully never have to step foot in those dumps again. Ya, my grocery/home goods bills are up maybe 15% by going elsewhere, but Im WAY happier that I dont have to suffer through the Walmart anymore.

Incompetent/disgruntled/apethetic employees, cheap Chinese junk products, bullying business practices, long lines, dirty stores-. not to mention that the most "interesting" folks in town tend to congregate there, especially at night. Then, on top of all that, they throw in the towel on their customers who excersize their 2A rights.

Good riddance, hope they fold.

That would mean more ammo for other companies. But considering that happened almost a year ago I doubt it has any impact on the situation at all.

WalMart quit the handgun and those specially evil rifle rounds after the shooting in TX.
WalMart had to run their ammunition stocks in warehouses across the country out. That took awhile.
Ammunition makers saw their WalMart contracts canceled and reduced production.
This seems like a reasonable list of events. Add to this more new folks buying guns and ammo, catching the distribution network with their pants down.
Many issues compounding the shortage.

When I was there over the weekend I ran into an older retired gent who was looking at a Simmons protarget 30 mm tube scope. I asked what he was looking for. He wanted a scope for his 270. Told him not to skimp on optics and that Simmons quality is hit or miss, also said I just got a Burris ff2. He left looking it up on his phone

My local Wal-Mart still has plenty of rifle ammo (less .223/5.56) in its cases. At pre-panic prices.

Come to think of it, haven't seen any Rugers there for a while, but the two long-gun cases with the wheels stay full of Mossbergs, Remingtons, Savages, Henrys and Marlins.
