I have started to reload some of my 45 APC brass I have had for years, with the prices approaching $1.00 a round now seemed like a good time.
What I had was two .50 cal ammo cans full of once fired brass.
They all had been de-primed, and wet tumbled with ss pins.
One of the cans was commercial that I had no trouble reloading.
The other was military once fired, head stamps from 1917-1990.
After I removed the crimp and resized, I started to prime, most primers seated with out a problem but some would not seat all of the way.
Upon examining I found the cases that would not accept the primers to the full depth were all pre 1943.
I checked the primer pockets and found that the pre 1943 cases had primer pockets diameter of .200" and post 43 cases were .210".
There was slight overlap as some 41,42's had .200" and others were .210".
Has any one ever encountered this?

Frankford Arsenal once used a .204 dia primer. Headstamp would be FA with last two digits of year.

I have only run into the undersize primer pockets on EC steel cases. Good to know there might be some brass cases with the medium primer.

I know they did but I have not seen any or even heard of any turning up until today.

The story goes that FA was making both .45 and .30 and did not want even a slight risk of switching primers which might give misfires in the pistol and blown primers in the rifle. So they made them different sizes. Didn't trust a standard .175" small pistol to ignite a .45 powder charge, apparently.

Trivia: Once upon a time DCM + NRA sold surplus components dirt cheap. So cheap that one guy with a .38 Super bought a surplus .45 barrel and turned .45 caseheads down to fit his breech face so as to use cheap primers and bullets. It didn't take many if he were shooting the national match course, 90 rounds per gun.

Thanks for that info JW.
I was not aware of primer differences, but then I long ago divested myself
of earlier G.I. cases after a struggle with some military Remington cases.
Now I know why.
