I have a small gunsmithing business and one of the things I do a lot of is mount scopes.I was working on a new rifle and scope for a friend of mine and I had it mounted, leveled and torqued down before I noticed the power adjustment worked backwards-turning the power ring counterclockwise increases the power. All the Leupolds I've ever seen increase the power when the ring is turned clockwise. It had a Ching Chung set of extra high rings in the box and came with a cheap rubber scope cover.I thought he had put them in the box when he sent me the gun and scope, but it turns out that they came with the scope.I couldn't imagine Leupold putting a trashy set of rings like these in the box with one of their scopes. The box looked authentic enough.I don't know if this is a new generation of fakes or if it's been around for a while.Poor guy bought 3 of them for $100 a piece. When it sounds too good to be true,it probably is.Just thought I'd throw that out there in the hopes that somebody else doesn't get hooked.

Current production is VX3i. Leupold hasn't used the "Vari-X" nomenclature in years and when they did it was with Roman numerals. Vari-X I, Vari-X II, Vari-X III, etc. When they changed to Arabic numerals they also dropped "Vari-X" and went to VX-1, VX-2, VX-3 etc. Knowing the difference will help spot fakes.

By using subtle differences in how they scopes are labeled or manufactured it is hard to prove they did anything illegal. I had a friend who once bought a pair of Oakey sunglasses thinking he had bought Oakley. Nothing illegal about someone selling Oakey sunglasses and if someone pays $100 instead of $10 that is their fault.

May cost a little more, to go through proper channels.
But there's no worry.
That is worth something.
Buying new.............safe way to go.

Used...........seen folks trying to pass off fakes at or close to market value.
There the price isn't a warning sign.

Bought 5 new Leupolds in the last year or so.
3 from my local gunshop and 2 from Doug at Cameraland.
Good deals, but then I don't shop for the "best".

Peace of mind and "there it is" is worth a few bucks to me.

I only buy mine from well known sources.I'm still amazed that of all the stuff on the internet about the fakes, nobody mentioned the power ring turning backwards.I have 15 Leupolds, and all the variable power scopes increase the power by turning the ring clockwise.Zeiss scopes work both ways,I had two of them in the shop last week, and one worked one way, another one went the other way.
