Got Primers; Not Proud ;-)

In other threads I sought and received help for a falling block .45-70. Finally decided and bought, couldn't be happier, so far. I have brass, pri$ey Winchester brass. After a long search I have powder, H4198 to start. The next hunt was bullets, but located 300gr coated and 405gr on the way. Now, LR primers .Virtually unobtanium :(

Semi-score. Dixie gun works (no idea how I landed there) has/had Remington 9-1/2 large rifle primers. Yay. Otherwise I could not fire the new rifle. Ready?

100 @ $9.50. ugh, Maximum, 2 boxes, $19. Excuse the pun, bite the bullet. $7.95 shipping, now at almost $27 for 200 sales limit. [sigh]

Oh yeah. $30 hazmat fee. Now I'm feeling ... taken advantaged of. BUT. I have beautiful new Sharps 1874, everything except out of stock factory ammo and everything reloadable except ... :cuss:primers. {sigh} $57+ for 200. Take it or leave it. 200 limit, so no bundling to offset hazmat. How bad do I want to shoot my new acquisition? Bad enough. Not proud.

-jb, just moaning

I have to believe you could find someone local willing to sell you a couple sleeves of large rifle primers for half that price. (Still a high price to pay, but $25 per 100 beats $57 per 100. I see them listed frequently on a more localized forum in my area for $100 per thousand. And yes, the shipping and haz mat fees are what makes it so difficult to acquire at a reasonable price these days. Especially in small quantities. Are there any gun clubs in your area? Bulletin boards in local gun shops? Seems like there should be someone local that could help you out.

That hazmat fee makes my head hurt. Bownell's had penny hazmat just last year. Here's a snip of an order I made not too long ago:

*EDIT*
Gotta love Illinois and their "internet sales tax" crap. Free shipping and $.01 hazmat though...

I can recall 6-7(?) years ago, during the last HooHah prior to the one in which we now find ourselves, needing some LPP (Large Pistol Primers) and being told that ClarkBros.Gunshop had some.
With tax, that brick of 1k primers cost me just under 50 bucks. :what: The guy handed me the receipt and I paused for a moment (thinking about how Dad & I started reloading in '68 with 1¢-1½¢ primers), looked up at the guy, and said something like, "I have been reloading for 45 years and that is by far the most that I have ever paid for a brick of primers."

None of the guys behind the counter appeared to appreciate my comment, perhaps because of the well-established ClarkBros.reputation for high prices. I was the only customer because I walked in the door as they opened, so I was really only saying it for ... me.

And I thought that was expensive.

O'course it was my fault for allowing myself to let my stocks fall so low. I was firing many more .45 & .44 than I usually did, so ...

Since then I do not stock for the way & what I currently shoot, I stock for everything that I may be shooting in the next 5-10 years.

Big basement ... ;)

Thanks, sincerely to the generous offers of sharing. Pretty much what exemplifies The High Road.
And, no, there are none to be found ANYWHERE around where I live. It's a pretty rural, small county. 1 gun shop in the next town, they haven't had any in a looong time. 1 public range 30 miles south, that is almost always empty because ... nothing to shoot.

I'll clearly not pay that price again, it was simply an overwhelming desire to try out the new rifle. Plink a few rounds, then ration the rest until the death grip loosens :(. The part that hurt was DGW limited to only 200, no way to dilute the hazmat fee with the small purchase. Of course I could reorder another 2 boxes, and pay another fee (nope).

Anyway, thanks again for sharing offers

-jb, finally going to feel the blast

Well... the good news is you have everything... so there is that. Sometimes the Low Road can take you places the High Road can't... ;) You've got some good powder to work with, too. Personally, I would probably start with the 405's, if you have them, and something in the neighborhood of 27-28grn (which is Hodgdon's starting Trapdoor data.) I haven't had as good luck with the lighter cast bullets in the .45-70 as I have had with the heavies.

I'll be honest, I picked a rotten year to start loading a completely new caliber. I decided in the spring to get into 460 S&W. The only thing I had for it was powder. No dies, brass, projectiles, primers...you name it. I dumb lucked out on finding 2 cases of LG Rifle mag primers at Bass Pro on two separate occasions. I was also able to get the components as well...something else hard to get now.

I foolishly decided to get into reloading 7.62x54r this week. Again, kind of lucked out. I stopped in a few places looking for powder and one place had one kind, IMR-4350, exactly what I was looking for. Dumb luck. Midway just happened to put the oddball .311 Sierra MK projectiles on sale this week...again, dumb.

keep watching Midwayusa. They sell primers at $50 per 1000. Not in stock now, but I have noticed that stock comes in and stock goes out. Finally got some H4350 powder by watching the website often. You might even score a free shipping bonus from time to time. Hazmat fees will apply (I think $10 or $15)
