Hi everybody, when my MD HQL "Liscense" arrives, I'll be in the market for a 'southpaw-friendly' full sized pistol. It'll be for HD, not interested in carrying. Looking at VP-9's and PP-Q's in 9 mm. I know it's a sorry time to be buying firearms but the last ones I bought were in 2000 and much has changed! Just trying to learn all I can before deciding. We'll probably go Monday to a local range/ gun shop and rent a couple to try-out. Any advise is certainly welcome!

My wife has a VP9. Great shooter, very accurate. I was very surprised she was able to manipulate the slide as it seemed a bit stiff but those end notches really helped.

Great gun. I've also put a few hundred rounds through it for function test on my reloads and noted one easily remedied issue. The groove for the trigger on the trigger guard allows a"trigger finger pinch "due to my larger hand/ fingers. If mine i would dremel the groove out and wet sand smooth if required. That is some nit picky thing but since you asked.

No walther experience

Edit.. my bad.. WELCOME ABOARD!

Wouldn't recommendations depend on what MD allows in the state. The state has a handgun approval board or some such rot?

So, what might be a good left-handed friendly gun, might not be approved for MD. You're just going to have to go to the local stores and see what they got. "SEE WHAT THEY GOT". Ah, there's another rub. With the panic-demic store don't have very big selections.

You might have to settle for something less-than-ideal and put in an order for your dream gun.

Welcome to THR!

Love my VP9! The interchangeable grip panels really make for a custom fit where you can tailor make it to your particular hand size and shape. Still getting use to the mag release paddles but that will come with time and more practice. The trigger is one of the best I have found in a striker fired pistol (still have to give a slight edge to my Ruger SR9c in that match-up), and the sights are great for being quick and easy to acquire on target.

Thanks Erief0g, my hands are medium sized at best so I should be fine with the VP-9's trigger guard. The "ears" on the rear of the slide will come in really handy for me. I'm beat-up and broken down from 50 years working for a paycheck. Surgery for Arthritis on both hands left them 'usable' but that's about all. My 4'10" Bride of 47 years will need a revolver. She had trouble racking the slide of a SW EZ that our instructor had.

Thanks alfsauve! According to the, people's republik of Maryland's "Handgun Roster", the VP-9's are allowed! My LGS will "work with me" on the Mags. We have family in PA.

Welcome, Walldog. Lots of good options on the market. Sounds like you’ve settled on a short list and either should be sufficient for self defense.

If possible, shoot before you buy. Practice a lot after you buy. Purchase a good light, either weapon mounted or handheld. Get some extra mags. Snag as many rounds as you can. That’s my advice.

Thanks for the info and welcome bannockburn. It'll be tough finding much selection because of the current plague- induced panic but I'll be patient.

Yes Sir, advise appreciated! We're heading to Freedom Arms on Monday to see what's available to test- fire. You're in Maryland?

both great choices. I have the hk, but not the ppq but I've shot it before. both are great pistols. I'm a southpaw shooter as well, but right handed for many other tasks. don't be afraid of right hand only controls. they can all be adjusted around with practice, if that was limiting your choices. ya dont have to let it. welcome btw.

Thanks jhb, I'd be alright with right hand controls if it wasn't for my limited range of motion with my right hand. Surgery on both and going back to work too soon,( my fault) not allowing the right hand to heal properly. My Maryland HQL 'License' just arrived yesterday, so I can shop to buy instead of shopping to look! I can relate to not being a lefty in everything. I throw, cast and bat right handed but that's about all.

Welcome aboard. I’m a southpaw shooter as well and have both PPQ’s and VP’s and both are southpaw friendly. I’m not a fan of safeties, (unless it’s a cocked and locked 1911) and I’ve learned how to navigate non lefty friendly pistols in the past. As for the PPQ and VP, both will serve you well. This PPQ is quickly becoming my favorite handgun.

Thanks for the welcome Lennyjoe, I haven't had a chance to shoot a PP-Q or VP-9 yet and choices will probably be pretty sad. I'm leaning toward the HK because of stiff thumbs, when pointing down.
Welcome to the monkey house! Keep your language clean and don't try to spell California with a "K" and you'll do fine.:D
Yes Sir, thank you. I went all the way to the 10 th grade,so my vocabulary isn't limited to juvenile profanity/vulgarity, as is all the rage these days!

Welcome! I'm a southpaw as well, and the VP9 and PPQ were at the top of my list when buying my first handgun due to how natural they feel in my hand. (I ended up with a P320 due to what was available at time of purchase and it's worked out fine, but I still think about getting a VP9 or PPQ.)

Thanks jhb, I'd be alright with right hand controls if it wasn't for my limited range of motion with my right hand.
Regarding left-hand vs right-hand controls, I usually think of mag release and slide lock, and whether right-hand-only controls are difficult to operate with my left hand, as opposed to something operated with your non-dominant/right hand. For ME, the only must-have is an ambidextrous slide lock; I've grown to prefer regular mag release on the left side. In a pinch I can operate a left-side slide lock with the knuckle of my left index finger, but it's much more natural (again, for ME) to operate a right-side slide lock with my left thumb.

Welcome to the forum. Its a good place to post and ask questions.

Thankfully you seem to know the difference between the two.

I think you’re on the right track. The paddle mag release is perfect for lefties. You could also consider a 1911 with an ambidextrous safety of capacity is a MD issue. I’ve enjoyed my HK P30SK as well as my PPQ.

I know a dude who shoots rifles right handed, and shoots handguns left handed.
