Do I have a *useless* firearm?....

Boy, DO I!

I took this off an old gal's hands as a favor as .40, semi-auto and magazine loading was too much for her. Another typical dickin' by a gun store employee selling what he liked instead of what she needed.

Got her into a fine S&W revolver which ironically was in the shop and she was talked out of by the tool behind the counter.

Now, I have this tall, .40 cal (got no others... want no others) that is not particularly light, not particularly thin and yet *small* by personal service standards.

Do NOT even get me started on the "GRIP ZONE"!:cuss: Shouldn't bother me as I can't see it when shooting but there it is. It is idiotic and pisses me off.

I've never been a fan of *stippling* Tupperware but if this sticks around I see an evening beside the fire with single malt and a soldering iron in its future.

Still, it is wonderfully made, speaks the truth about mag capacity (unlike EVERY Glock I've ever owned) and has some strangely pleasing ergos - most especially with the long mag in it.

No..... NO! I will NOT allow myself to like this thing.

*Useless*? I name thee XD40 Sub Compact!

Todd.

I have a Rohm RG10 in .22 short. It is literally the most inaccurate and least reliable gun I've ever experienced.

The barrel is bent to the left, and it would miss a man sized target at a yard or two. The gun will misfire about 2 to 3 rounds if you just go wild in double action.

I used to wonder why my grandpa hated it, but now I get it... He said it was the type of gun you shove in somebody's belly before pulling the trigger. He called it the, "Saturday night special". But it isn't special. It sucks.

I'm holding onto it for sentimental reasons, or incase some idiot politician offers $200 for a handgun buyback. I probably couldn't get $50 for it as is...

Useless gun??? No. I would tell you why I have guns that I don't use, don't hunt with, don't use for self defense. I would tell you why I have guns that have not fired in years. I would tell you why I have guns that I just clean and look at and admire from time to time. But I don't know how. Useless?? No.

I have seen many useless guns. Or guns with such specialized and esoteric uses that I shake my head that buyers could be found for them. But I don’t typically buy those guns for my own stash. Then again I’m sure a fair few of mine are probably completely useless for someone else. My last two acquisitions have cracked stocks and are chambered in completely unavailable, obsolete calibers....

I guess useless is strictly to the owners line of thought. I have a couple of ancient rimfire .32 pocket pistols that are non functioning but look cool on a display board...so I dont want to get rid of them. I have a Winchester model 70 in 22-250 that is a great shooter, but I havent shot in fifteen years, as well as a .270 Ruger...also a great shooter, but falls outside my niche. Many times I have considered selling them to upgrade another arm or buy something more interesting, but hang on to them mainly because they ...fill out my firearm range of calibers/cartridges and potential. I consider myself a minimalist but have some guns like those that I guess I just dont have a good reason to get rid of. Maybe because I also am set up to reload all of my guns and if there is a trouble with supply, I have another gun to fall back on.

You could have "Bang Zone" engraved near the muzzle.

The closest thing to a useless firearm I have is a Spanish 7mm Mauser a co-worker gave me back in the late 80's. It was wrapped in duct tape & spray painted black when it was given to me. I cleaned it up & did a home re-blueing job on it before I took it to a gunsmith to learn what I had (the fellow who gave it to me wasn't sure exactly what it was). The Smith told me what it was, advised me to tie a string around a trigger & get behind a tree before I shot it the first time & sold me a box of ammunition. I followed his advise. It didn't take long to figure out that the sights are sat up for 300 meters & that at ranges around 100 yards the bullet would hit about 8" above point of aim. Then I learned that in order to scope it I would have to use a scout type mount or modify it. Shortly after that I bought a .30-06 Winchester bolt gun. It has just never seemed worth it to put the money into it I would have to for me to want to hunt with it. I keep thinking I should do something with it though as it does work.
Replacement front sight blades are readily available from midway and brownells. They come extra tall so you can file down to height needed to correct zero. They are less than $20, drift into the dovetail.
