I've been on a revolver collecting kick lately. I've been buying both useful and older interesting wheelguns and I shoot them all.

A couple of days ago I saw a new S&W 500 mag with a 4 inch ported barrel for $839.

It's not the money really it's just that it goes against my code to buy a gun 100% useless to me.

One range doesn't allow 50 caliber pistols, the other range would allow it but the other shooters in the blast radius would suffer profusely.

I don't hunt

Don't have any old cars to shoot at (anymore).

Ammo is $91 for 50 rounds.

It sure looks cool though.

Do any of you folks buy guns that have no practicality?

Absolutely! "Need" has nothing to do with it. It's all about "Want". I recently picked up a High Standard 44mag Crusader because I wanted one since I can first remember. At least you can run a few rounds through the Smith. There is no way I could bring myself to test fire the NIB Crusader. Gun collecting is fun, (if you have certain psychological disorders like myself and 99% of everyone else on this forum), and you don't have to worry about losing money. They do nothing but appreciate in value if you take care of them.

Well, after my 5th 1911

I decided that I was out of the 'need' catagory and into the 'want it' zone. Didn't stop me from buying two already this year though.

If ya want it, and can afford it, get it. Got to have your toys, it's what keeps going to work tolerable.

Get it. I didn't "need" mine when I got it, but I'm still glad that "want" overpowered "need". I still giggle like a schoolgirl every time I squeeze the trigger. :D

To paraphrase that Cheryl Crow song, it's not having what you want, it's wanting what you have. Sure. Makes sense. No it doesn't... er, I know, it doesn't! I, too, have no need for a 4" .500... but I still think about getting one. Heck, I sold my old friend , my .454 SRH, due to worsening carpal tunnel problems... and still, I think about that 4" .500... and that barrel-less SRH Alaskan.

I say, if your credit card bill doesn't rival a third world country's GNP, and you haven't sold blood yet this year, buy it. It's still winter, so at least keep paying your power and gas bills. We could all stand to fast for a while...

Speaking of useless firearms.... buy an 1895 Nagant. I bought two... then a third. Each came with a holster, screwdriver, cleaning rod, lanyard, 20+lb trigger, and an ammo requirement you won't find anywhere! Of course, they are reasonable... that last one was $69.95! What has more to offer? Ammo you can't find... and that 20+lb trigger... did I tell you about the wimpy 100gr Ruskie target ammo that makes 580fps? Seriously, all the pluses for little cost.

Yeah, we all have the disease...

Stainz

STAINZ, you just sold me. I'm adding a Nagant to my list now. Thanks

And I thought that I was bad! I'm gonna have to show my wife your post, Stainz, just so she knows I'm not the only one!

Amen, brother

I have this argument with myself every time I buy a single-shot target .22, especially now that I need progressive lenses in my glasses to see the target (NOT), and I drink too much coffee for a steady hold. Still, who could resist a beauty like this:

Every firearm must be useful for something otherwise they wouldn't have produced it! Besides if it goes bang it's good for something.

I already got the 4" .500 mag and am looking for something else to hold off the craving. Any suggestions?

jsalcedo you've read my mind when it comes to that next purchase!!! I've been "wanting" a S&W 500 in the 4" bbl since it came out. I'm hoping I get a decent tax return. If so I will have a new addition to my small but growing collection. Needing is a relative term. You never know when that grizzly bear will start banging on your front door and you don't have time to get a rifle out. Now you don't have to worry about that.

"Practicality" is a very subjective term. I have way more handguns than I will ever really need but each of them fills a niche in one way or another. What I have found is that sometimes those niches disappear and then I will sell a gun off if it doesn't appeal to me anymore. Quite frankly, this a very rare occurrence as I give a lot of thought to each gun purchase, and is a good part of the fun in selecting which will be the next one. I have purchased guns for three different reasons:
1. range use and plinking fun
2. defensive purposes
3. cool factor, something I just happened to like.

To me, these are all reasonable rationalizations and I have never jeapordized my financial situation in doing so. Bottom line, if you can afford it and want it, get it. If you buy right you shouldn't wind up losing too much in the event you want to sell it later.

Proud owner of scoped, ported 10.5 inch barrelled Ruger Super Blackhawk. Someday, it'll bag a deer......

Got a wee lil' .22 short revo - from WA ... it is pretty much past useful shooting but is OTOH just plain interesting ... came outa Germany. So, got it! Most other items tho have plenty of ''practicality'' :)

I'm pirating this thread

Funny quick story. I bought the Ruger SuperRedhawk off of this Yuppie at the Range. Pistol, scope and holster for something like $300 or $400, I don't remember. He bought it from the shop about a month prior. Anyway, I was shooting it, using some high powered rounds that I created. Anyway, some wimp was in the next lane shooting a .22. He got pissed off and left. The guys up front told me that he complained that I was shooting a cannon back there and that he couldn't concentrate due to the noise factor.

Dang, I hope to see him there again. I don't need a pistol like that but it sure is fun having one.

I guess since a S&W 500 is cool and interesting that is reason enough to buy it.

I own 3 different .357 mag revolvers. Im also getting a 4th. In addition I will be picking up the new ruger alaskan when its out. I live in the suburbs of Michigan. lots of bears. ;)

I used to, until the twins came along... Now all my discretionary funds seem to go towards diapers :)

If I were to win the lotto, the partial list of wheelguns I'd pick up right away is:

-S&W 629 PC "Magnum Hunter" - who doesn't want to own the gun made famous by "Snake" Pliskin in Escape from NY?
-S&W 500 4" - just because!
-S&W 629 Classic 5" - at least one that I'd actually use; great hunting gun!
-Colt SAA 7.5" .45 LC - for my right hip
-Colt SAA 3" .45 LC with bird's head grip - for my left hip (cross draw, of course)
-Colt Python 4" stainless

I'm sure there are others that would catch my eye in short order...

Regards,

Kevin

Well it's either buy guns or drink expensive beer.

The guns win hands down.

Hahaha, you are one funny old guy!

Why did I buy the K-38 with my shakey hands and bad eyesight?

Why did I buy the S&W 25-5 that fires a 131 year old cartridge, and can't really support the heavy modern hunting loads?

Why did I buy the NAA Mini in .22 LR (1-5/8" bbl) when I have one in .22 Mag with a 1-1/8" bbl?

Why did I buy the Model 29 Classic when I had a 629 Classic?

Why did I buy the Taurus Model 85 when I had the S&W Model 36?

Etc, etc, etc....
