Excluding extra mags or speed loaders, 'which I, and I am sure many others carry". Would you feel that 5 rounds was enough, 10, or 15+.
This is a subjective question, because no one knows what on might be facing on even that 1 bad day. I have a front night site on any guns . I found early in life that the gun is pretty much useless if you can't see the front sight, or a laser or even a built in weapon light. and extra ammo.
Some of these if not most, can be removed for daytime use, but if you end up in a basement or dark room, even during the day, you may need every edge you can get. Many like their carry gun to be stripped down of any extra gadgets that might encumber it's use, but a front sight won't really make any difference other than enable you to get the gun on the target, much faster, in any but complete darkness.
Basically, if you can't see it, clearly, you can't hit it where you want to. If you can see it, but can't see the muzzle of your gun, it's almost the same thing. You might get lucky and point shoot it , but that's very iffy when you can't see what your shooting at clearly, you realy should not be shooting at something you can't see in front of and behind. Glow sticks work well for this also, , yet another thing to take along.
Suddenly you are out of ammo and alone in the dark. I know many claim to carry a weapon light, but how any people actually do on a regular basis if they aren't Law enforcement?
2 Mags, a gun and a weapon light are a lot of things to lug around all day, I haven't found a magic way of doing it without a fanny type device, for a tac light , mags, takedown tool, knife, wallet, keys, phone, glasses, etc., etc.
Sometimes you have to forgo much of this, if you go out to dinner or go visiting, or you look like a prepper. Being retired I can get away with wearing what I want to cover up most of my "stuff", but unless you wear "cargo pants" everyware you go, it is a real challenge, so I understand that something is better than nothing. What is the normal amount of stuff you carry and where does it all go. A strong belt is the key, but still without a fanny pack, I just can't contain it all, plus god forbid you need to use the bathroom, they will send a search party looking for you.
I catch a lot of grief rom my wife for carrying all this gear, but have always done so, "before I married" and will continue to do so in this crazy world in which we live.

Many people carry 5 shot 38 snubs without reloads. I carry mine full and have reloads loose in my pocket. A lot of folks use speedstrips. With autos it's pretty easy to carry another mag opposite the gun to balance the weight out a bit.

My gun and my wallet. No reloads, no knife, no light. Not criticizing those who do, but I don't.

either a full size 1911 w/ a 8 round mag, or a Officers Model (3.5 barrel) and a 6 round mag, not topped off ( that is, one in the chamber, 7 in the mag/ 1 in the chamber, 5 in the mag), plus a 10 rounder for back up.

the pistol is in a Forbus paddle at 4 o'clock, the spare mag in a holder at 8 o'clock. I have a few compact high output flashlights to hand (jacket pocket, man bag, car, saddlebags, etc. - Hi, I'm Ramone, and I have a flashlight addiction), and there's always a Streamlight Stylus pro either in my left pocket or clipped to the mag holster.

I always am afraid of leaving the gun in the car when I do that. I did maybe one time, but the fear of doing it never left. There should be a blue tooth device that tells you if you have gotten more than 3 yards away from your gun. Like the car keys on my new car.
Since they made starting the car possible without the key, I would bet, more people forget their keys now than ever.
But that is a good idea for some inventor to come up with, just put the sending unit in the grip.
Actually it's a good idea on several levels. like the locator for your vehicle, you would be able to track your gun, should it get stolen, or misplaced in the house.

Same for well over 20 years

Glock 23 & spare mag [ 3 if going to busy places ].

BUG is a S&W 360 w/ Bianchi speed strip [ ankle or pocket = depending on weather.

3 folders,slipjoint,SAK & BM 710.

Mace minie,pocket carry.

I've left a gun in a locked car many times and I anticipate doing it many more times.

Here you can't carry into government buildings, which means when I go vote (I early vote and it is in a county building) or go to the post office, it goes into the console of the truck. No biggie. Just make sure your vehicle is locked.

Now don't get me wrong, I wouldn't leave one in the vehicle overnight or anything like that if at all possible.

With a car you lose it at Walmart you beep the horn and find the car. With a gun the noise would be more interesting, especially for the guy trying to steal it and looking down the barrel...

I just emailed a company that specializes in inventions, https://www.indiegogo.com/, these guys, there are many interesting crowd funding projects here, and I have gotten involved in several over the years. I just want to see what they think about that idea.
Getting back on the subject at hand, like Paul said about leaving the gun in the car. Some states frown upon it if not make it illegal to do so, and others encourage it. If you did it in NY, "which is nuts anyway", you could lose your license, but in FL it's normal and legal to do so. I always felt that if they break the window to steal my wife's empty turned out, handbag, "empty as it was" a handgun is going to be a sure break in if they even see a box on the floor.
, It still cost me a rear windshield in the truck. It would be nice to be able to track your gun with an app on your cell phone, yes? You could remove the tracker when you didn't need or want it, and use it for any gun you had out with you or in your safe, If your house got robbed you could find your guns, theoretically. Gun theft should plummet. I am thinking in the grip or in a phony magazine. Just a thought

My wife hates my cargo pants. I love the pockets and access my 5.11 taclite pros give me. They are the only pant ,other than dress pants, that I own. I can carry a g26 appendix carry, a 17 round mag, utility folder knife, combat folder/mace/asp baton, cell phone, wallet and whatever else.

I usually carry a .38 snub with no reload and a small pocket knife just about everywhere.

If I feel I'm going somewhere more high-risk than usual, I might carry another cylinder's worth of loose rounds in my pocket.

I keep at least a (50-round) box worth of ammo in the trunk, so if I can get back to my car I figure I should be good to go.

Without gratuitously mentioning the model and brand of my primary carry gun, I'll play along.

I always carry at least one folding knife with a locking blade that is flipper assisted for faster opening. I always have keys in one pocket and a cell phone in the other.

I work in a non-permissive workplace so my semi-auto and a spare magazine ride in the console of my vehicle during normal "working hours". I have a 50 round box of ammo for that gun stashed in the truck. I also keep a spare carry belt and holster in the truck, even when not dressed for carry, in case I am forced to abandon my truck and don my grey man clothes. I keep a small high quality LED flashlight in the glove compartment. I train with this light as a hand held weapon light. When the sun starts going down or when I go into a dim environment like a movie theater, I take it out of the glove box and drop it in my pocket.

When I am not dressed for or going to work, I always carry at least one spare 8 round magazine on my carry belt, sometimes two. I do this more from a standpoint of mag loss or mag failure, not round count. Refer to darkness and other items mentioned in above paragraph for other items on my person.

Since I am rarely far away from my truck, there are a lot of other items like multi-tool, larger flashlight, etc. kept in the truck.

I normally carry a fullish sized auto (1911, or Glock 21), unless its a compact (Glock 19, 23) or a snub .38.

With the 19, 23 and 1911 I carry 2 spare mags, mostly because my double mag pouches conceal as easy as anything else. The 21 usually gets one spare mag.

I usually only carry the .38 special if its really hot (cargo shorts), I need to pocket carry (dress clothes) or I don't feel like wearing pants (athletic shorts, or similar). If I've got that I usually toss a speed strip in the other pocket.

Other than the gun, I usually have a little Streamlight Microstream and pocket knife, one clipped to each pocket. Plus the usual keys, wallet and phone.

The weight is not all that much if you think about it. Weaponlight stays on my weapon. Namely because my carry weapon becomes home defense weapon when I take it off at night. Sights are my next upgrade for my firearms. I do carry a handheld flashlight all the time, and it is not that heavy. Although it is a bigger model, 2xCR123, than the typical EDC flashlight.

As far as reloads go, I don't go crazy. Many of my primary carry weapons are 10 rounds or better for capacity. My current is a 12+1 carry. Which makes carry with reloads 24+1 or 36+1. 2 extra magazines is the most extra ammo I am willing to carry weight wise, after that I carry a BUG if I think/expect to be in a rough part of town. A good belt really helps out here. If your belt is good for carrying a 4 pound 1911 and you carry a 23oz polymer pistol with a pair of reloads, it balances out pretty well.

Sorry, but I have to ask WHY? If you need this much stuff, maybe you need to revisit where you go? THREE knives, plus mace plus two guns and reloads?? WAY overboard IMO (unless you are the wrong race living in the wrong section of town)

My CC IWB, 9 in the rack and one in the pipe, and a pen knife. If I thought I needed more for a certain area, I just don't go there.

I carry a subcompact 9mm, Streamlight Pro Tac 1AA, and 3" spine lock folder at a minimum. Occasionally I'll carry a spare mag, and maybe an axis lock AO folder. Rarely anything more than that.

If somewhat dressy, my Beretta Nano (or other) cc's at about four-thirty.

My new 5.11 5-in-1 jacket has room for a lot more. The small zippered pockets at the cuffs are awesome for a multitool in the left and a spare mag in the right.

Cargo pants are to me a big signal that a guy is just carrying too much stuff.

Check this out,http://mashable.com/2013/01/23/bluetooth-device-track-phone-valuables/, this is old news, the new ones are tiny, small enough to fit in a key fob. Putting one in the grip of a pistol or plug of a glock type pistol would work well. I sent a proposal to a company that funds this kind of thing, and they thought it was "brilliant".
So maybe I will write them a business plan, since the goods are already available, it's a matter of building a working prototype that they can see. I just did it because I could, and their response was better than I expected. Will let you know what happens.
As I mentioned I have 2 such Apps on my phone and they work within 50 feet 5 county's away.https://www.indiegogo.com/, take a look at some of the funding projects in different stages.
