I wish I could find a nice 6 1/2” 624. It would be neat to have, both a 4” & 6 1/2”. The 4”, with the tapered barrel, to me, is one of the best looking revolvers ever made. You did well. There are not many 624s for sale now. A few years back, there were quite a few out there. 624s in good condition, are being held on to. I would be willing to bet, the price will start to reflect that, pretty soon.

I've got a 4" 624 and wouldn't take a penny less than that for it. If I wanted to sell it, that is.

I just bought a S&W model 624. SS 44 Special. Has a 6 1/2 barrel. Factory original smooth target grips, wide target hammer and grooved trigger. Gun is 95-98% condition. SS can use a polishing. I paid $800 and believe it was a good deal. No box. It is not one of the recalled one's either.
What say you fellow gunners?
You could try a Cape Cod Polishing Cloths. I use it on my matte SS watches for just a bit of shine. I also used it on my new Colt Cobra

One thing for sure..since you already bought it...DON'T ask or look for any info on whether or not is was a good, bad or there are any other 'deals' out there.
Because you will get those who say 'good' and those who will say 'bad' and those who are selling the same gun for more and less..

'Worth' is a YUGE word..it WAS 'worth it' to you since ya plunked down yer $...no need to look further, just go shoot it...asking for 'validation' is a dead end street...

IMHO and YMMV and all that.

i bought my 4" 624 several years ago with box papers and several sets of grips in ex condition for 500.00. i shoot 240 gr hard cast 900 fps.

I was looking on gunbroker, last night, and checked to see what 624s were selling for now. There were 3 or 4 3” , 1 6 1/2” and 1 4” for sale. The other sights had even less. There are not very many for sale, right now. A few years ago, there were many for sale. People that have them, are holding on to them. No dash and prelock 624s, may be one of those revolvers that it’s get it now or pay a very high price late revolvers. I bought a 4”, new in the box, a few years ago and paid a grand for it. I thought I paid too much at the time, but now I see I could easily get what I paid, and then some. I don’t think 624s will be a easy to come by, as they were a few years back. I think the price they bring will only increase. Mine, would be on of the last I would consider selling.

.44spl is seeing a resurgence in popularity right now. Revolvers have come back hard and people like myself are researching and reading the history. It's only natural that Skeeter's writings draw the new guys towards the original heavy hitter.
I'll admit that I turned my nose up at the lowly special for years, but I've finally come round.

My taste runs to .45ACP versions of big N frames, but the .44 Special is appealing too. No need to go BTTW like a .44 Magnum. A 625 in .45 Colt would be fun as well.
As PPs have noted, revos are making a big comeback, and those of us (like moi) who parted with some now regret it.

Wintertime carry
Usually- tho I have carried a time or two in Summer. I reserve that for my LFrame 44spl’s.

The 624 from what I’ve read is heat treated to same as magnum specs, and only makes sense from a Production/Liability standpoint. I believe Skeeter propositioned S&W to produce this configuration…. And they almost got it rite- Except no 5” barrel (Still trying to figure that out).
I had a Mountain gun mag model, Yet parted with it Becouse my 624 isn’t going anywhere.

Price wise- Like most pre lock S&W’s- astronomical in this market. I think I paid $800 10
Years ago. Yet today without a box, no Fingergroove combat grips…. $1000 would be fortunate to find.

If Response was to my previous post-I certainly read entire thread. Just stated I paid $800 10 years ago…. And my opinion is $1000 now a days is a great deal. 2FA7A5D9-232F-4B90-B2DA-A252273BE64A.png

For what it’s worth- I seen a 24 ,Lew Horton model like mine - No box, yet had the Finger Groove combats 2 years ago at my Local Shop for $1200.
Probably should have.

CraigC- That’s a beauty.

Just need a Leather Chest Holster & Skeeters 7.5 Unique with a Hard Cast 240/250gr (Use Books).

That would be sweet for Hunting.

I’m a Firm Believer in The 44 special and it was put into a capable 44spl heat treated Lead dispenser… 624/24. It is capable to Load hot If one chooses to- Strong forcing cone and Steel (research). Otherwise Slinging 240/250 cast Powder coated around 850-900fps should Cover most issues one would have with Paper or other Targets.
I do think tho that these Revolvers get passed by a lot of people as they simply don’t reload or the typical “Why Not get a Mag and shoot the Spl” . The Deal may be out there, Just gotta keep looking.

My 624 is the Lew Hortons 3” RB model.

Ive always been thinking a 5” taper barrel model would be the Best. If I could ever find a 6.5” tapered 624 barrel and have a Gunsmith Cut it back, With a different screw in front sight….. retaining the 3” original barrel.
That would be A Sweet Sidearm for Many a applications.

Finding the 6.5” barrel is the real challenge.

Yet a 5” 624 RB - Skeeter would approve without Question.

Buffalo Bore 190gr at approximately 1,050 fps for carry.

Unique and Cast with powder coat 7FE8358A-5D7B-46CD-832C-1C0D63F4C6C7.png for Target.

About 20’ Dbl action from the Leather
