gun recoil

The method of measuring recoil energy is with the pendulum method, where you suspend the weapon with wires, shoot it and measure how far back and up it goes and calculate the energy from that.
There are some pretty good college white papers on the subject floating around out there. The pendulum method being one of several ways to go about it. The papers I have seen were mostly by ME (Mechanical Engineering) students. Good stuff.

Here is an example.

What does
charge fps: 4000 4700 2000
or use m.v. times: 1.50 1.25 1.75
on
http://kwk.us/recoil.html mean exactly ?

These are values used to estimate the velocity of the gas escaping when the bullet exits. There are general rules of thumb for each value. 1.25 = shotgun, 1.50 = handgun, 1.75 = rifle.

It is a way to measure the 'ejecta' which is the weight of the gunpowder and its contribution to the recoil force.

I was introduced to high powered rifles with the M-1 Garand, we fired 200-300 rounds a day on the Army's training course. A lot of guys were really beat up by it. I had an M16 in Vietnam and it felt like I was shooting a BB gun. Seems to me the 556 doesn't have any recoil. But the 458 SOCOM firing a 500 gr is another story.

And the 4000 4700 and 2000 mean what exactly?

Ok a few more dumb questions. You dont have to answer if they seem too stupid to you
If one were to hypothetically modify an M4 to fire 70 grain bullet at 3020 fps how much would the recoil be as opposed to an M4 chambered with m855a1 round ? How much of a difference would a DI rifle make opposed to a Short stroke gas piston in this case?

Anyone know what is the recoil of the Chinese 5.8x42mm?

Does M4 technically have a higher recoil than an M16 with the same bullet?

How much bigger is the recoil of 6x45mm bullets.

Plug your numbers into the formula at http://kwk.us/recoil.html

That will answer the questions that can be objectively answered.

Subjective answers to recoil are subjective, so don't expect useful answers in those cases.
