These tough times finding reloading stuff i have to laugh at some of the prices ! Even when you can find the stuff you cant afford it .take a pound of 4227 @ 37 dollars add 40 or so for shipping and hazmat and im paying over 80 dollars for it.Dont get me wrong this isn't the powder makers fault its the price to do business through the mail. i won't get started on the price gouging of other products. For now ill put my hobby on hold

I don't know what part of the North East your from, I'm in NY, my last order of powder I got 4 lb, pre panic pricing, but for me it's hard to buy in bulk,. At the time of my order I had 1 son still at home, in college, and had to have a grandchild stay with us, for reasons that would shut your thread down, so I won't go there. Anyway I found out that shipping basically stayed the same for weights under 50 lbs, hazmat her was the same for 1 lb as it was for 8 lb, so buying higher quantities reduced overall cost per pound. Don't get me wrong I still can't go online and buy 5 8 lb jugs of powder, don't have that much extra capital, but if that is a powder you use a lot of then getting a larger quality may help with price, yes the higher panic cost hurts too, but if you extend a little bit now then dip some on other things it might pay off in the long run.

I’ll likely continue to buy more than I consume but like you will wait until everyone has a 2nd room full (like the toilet paper crisis of 2020) and prices come back to earth.
ooooh yeah! also, join the February boycott! crash, burn, and recover

Organize a group buy, watch the dealers like a hawk, and pounce when it's in stock. Graf's had Win. 572 in yesterday, a group from another forum went in and bought most of it, it's all gone this morning. (There was still some last night as of 9PM)
Normally, powder is available locally, and even during the last 3 'droughts', there was at least something on the shelf. Might not have been 'your' powder, but something that would work for the time being. It was like this a few months back, I got to try out CFE223, because that's the only powder usable for that caliber my LGS had left. Haven't shot any yet, but heard lots of good things about it. Rifle and pistol primers never completely disappeared either, Though CCI 34 and 41's did in '08. 209's are still at my LGS, limit 1 box. I had been buying the by the sleeve. (5 boxes, 5000 primers)
I'm not boycotting, but I am buying less (for more money that before!) and still loading, though more trap loads than rifle or pistol.

Sometimes you can get lucky on midway, or other places that have free shipping coupons (use honey for example), and snag up some stuff without overpaying on shipping. I've shopped locally a number of times, especially at a range that I shoot frequently, but the unfortunate side of my LGS' is that they have regular buyers that'll visit Bass Pro & other locations on a daily basis to purchase up inventory and then resell it at the LGS for incredibly marked up prices, which ultimately just evens out to the cost if you'd have it shipped in. At my local BPS yesterday, had a shipment of powders & SRP's in, but the issue there is it's held back by the hunting department manager for his personal benefit.

Like everything else... is it worth the cost?

Just yesterday, I paid the price for 2# of H4198 at Powder Valley. With everything factored in, it'll be about $43/lb, but that is the one powder that I needed. I could have tried to add more powder... I'm sure there is something I needed... but you take the risk of losing everything while you are shopping. H4350 went out of stock by the time I put it in my cart and made it to the checkout. It is what it is. I'm pretty comfy on everything else... other powders and primers, for example, but I will continue to shop locally to find what I can find. I don't buy things arbitrarily.. just to have them, I pick stuff up as part of a long-term goal of not running out of things... like IMR4198.

I've probably got enough stuff to keep my shooting for, well, lets just say a very long time. I cast, and if things stay really bad for a really long time I can at least shoot black powder as I can make my own percussion caps and have even bought all the stuff to make black powder (test batch this spring just to make sure I can do it). If you have supplies laid up to some extent, you simply need to figure out what is your "don't go below" level, set that aside, and make the rest of it last as long as you can until you find reasonably priced stuff. Maybe that is a couple of years, maybe that is 4 years. Maybe you will get lucky and stumble across a good deal. Get out the single shot rifle, the single action revolver, take up black powder.

and once you seen that stock shelves you thought “I just need a few” it will come back!

Here's the funny part;
I'm trying to match up the amount of primers to the amount of projectiles I have on hand, so I was just going to buy 500 of each srp and spp. I was told NO. My choices were to buy either 200 each, or 1000 each. I said that makes no sense, so I bought 1000 each.
Guess I have to buy projectiles now because I'm still not matched up!

that’s funny! but ha... rules are rules

I am still finding stuff. I’m not actively looking for it, but I’m finding stuff. I posted a gun for sale locally and the first offer I got on it was a mix of cash and reloading supplies. Turns out that the guy has things I want. Deal struck, meeting him Saturday. That’s 38 spl brass and bullets, 223 brass and bullets, and 2/3 my asking price in cash. Everything priced out at normal prices for the trade. Got another offer from a different guy, asked if I reload and if I was interested in what he had stock of. I don’t need his stuff but he needs mine so we are still talking. Again, normal pricing. I understand this is the private secondhand market, but it doesn’t really matter. Public market... I needed some 223 bullets before I made the trade agreement mentioned above. Went straight to Gunbroker because I knew the big name shops were sold out. Searched “.224 bullet” and then filtered to buy it now and listed price low to high. Sure enough, quality bullets listed for $16 per hundred and shipping was reasonable. I bought 4 boxes because that put me at a good spot for what I want to do right now. After the trade listed above I will be even better off. Primers, I have swapped around a lot lately getting small rifle for large rifle and large pistol. I need a few small pistol but I’m confident that I can find them and swap something for them at a sane pricing level. Powders are more available than anything else in my area, I can likely make 2 or 3 trips to academy and get a pound or two of something that will work for what I want to load.

That's funny. Limit 2 on sleeves. Limit 1 on bricks. OK, I'll take a brick!

I try to match up also, but with powder. Buy a pound of powder, buy a brick or two of primers. With 9mm I get about +/-1500 rounds per pound, depending on charge.
I can always cast more bullets as needed.

Yeah, I wasn't about to argue.
Like Mark_Mark said above...
"Rules are rules"

Unless you have one of the big stores locally, your not going to find stuff at your LGS. My LGS has not gotten any shipments of powder or primers in over 6 months. They are at the bottom of the list since they don't do anywhere near the same volume that a place like powder valley does.

Most of our locals here in N. FL stopped carrying reloading supplies during the post-Y2K crash. We have pretty weird insurance and fire regulations down here for businesses so the cost of storage and purchasing just chased a lot of Mom-n-Pop stores out of the powder and primer business completely. Having to build a bang-closet to store powder - unless you're a store like Bass Pro/Cabella's with all kinds of money and clout - is just too much for an owner paying dollars for each sq. ft. instead of pennies.
