Consider:
If there are no primers, powder is useless
And if there is no powder, primers are useless
And neither of the above, bullets are useless
And then cases are useless
And then reloading tools useless
You can see where this road goes!
There is one lgs I know that will sell you primers, but only if you buy 4 pounds of powder. Great, but problem is they have no powder! So they won’t sell you any primers. That really helps!
Why aren’t there any companies that manufacture both? Looks like it would be a company survival issue.
Somebody is missing a billion dollar goldmine here.
Remington and Winchester used to before they sold out.
Is there something I’m missing here?

So tired of hearing about primers!

can we talk about, say, reloading in a camp sight, best steak for reloaders, best beer after reloading, best reloader in the world.... something other than the shortage of primers.

Sorry to post on your thread :(

Most of the propellants are made by individual companies and they are not all in the USA. It is a majority of primers are made by Vista Outdoors companies. They are making things as fast as they can but are directing their components to finished ammo as that is more profitable now. We have to wait our turn after ammo comes back in stock and sales slow first.

Good point

Yeah I’m with you about primers. Just seems this powder and primer thing is going to have a very bad trickle down effect for the entire reloading industry. If and when it’s over I would love to see total industry graph.
By the way, my inventory is OK as I went into this prepared. So I’m not gripping, just subjecture.

It’s like this.... I think....

Everyone will get there supply of primers, powder, brass, AR magazines, .22lr. then everyone will be happy and horde something else

Yep, CCI/Speer before the buy out, now Vista who owns them AND Federal

A little advice: for the sake of your own sanity, DO NOT research who owns the majority of America’s pork production and processing. You don’t want to know.
I do know as I’m in the NC pork producing belt. Smithfield Farms!
And Food Lion food stores!
And the same one that generously gave us the 2020 COVID-19.

This thread was not meant whine about no primers or turn into a political issue.
It was only meant to open OUR eyes to what the long lasting trickle down effect could be to OUR reloading hobby.

Moderator has my permission to close if it gets too out of line.

Don't tell me bacon is next!
Absolutely Brilliant !

The way out of this is for all of us to lay down posts on every social media platform saying that the Chinese have developed a taste for American bacon, and Hormel and all the others will be diverting a significant portion of their production to the China market. Then people will start to focus on bacon, and everything else you can fry in a pan.

When all the bologna is gone, primers will magically reappear.

Flintlocks use flint, black powder and lead. And bacon grease if you have it. Use the reloading press for a boat anchor. LOL

I have some more bad news

The solvents and chemicals used to make powder and primers are petroleum based.

The 100 year winter blast that hit Texas last month did a lot of damage to refineries in the Houston area. Many of them are still conducting repairs.

As a result, force majeure notices have been going out to companies that use petroleum derivative materials like plastics and other chemical compounds.

Then to add insult to injury, the Suez Canal has been blocked for 2 weeks. Guess what that does to oil shipments, and the refineries that need the oil to manufacture their products

So, don’t expect relief to come anytime this week, or next

The primer focus is self generated by us. I have seen dozens of posts during the last shortage and in the good times between saying stock up on primers. The weird part now is every is gone. All components all gear including casting. I always thought casting gear would be a safe place to always have bullets. Cant even find pots to melt lead. Never would have thought and the depth of my preparation needs to extend to everything not just primers and powder.

don’t forget the major shipping lane Suaze Canal being blocked, it’s the other side of the world but will effect stuff here too. I think I’ll go stock up on rubbing alcohol, TP, and bacon today! why not, no primers to buy

Too late...Smithfield was sold to a Chinese concern ten years ago or so. They already have a taste for bacon. What’d ya think the virus was about? Getting the rest of the bacon.

The Suez Canal passes something like 1.9 million barrels of oil daily and after 6 days of being closed the canal is again open for business. There is a backlog of ships waiting in line so that will take awhile. Powder is showing up at distributors and what does show up is consumed quickly. Primers which are being manufactured 24/7 domestically are currently going to the major ammunition manufacturers, this has been constantly published. During the last great shortage, following Sandy Hook primers from a few overseas manufacturers like Seller & Bellott were imported but once domestic manufacturer was supporting the demand imports stopped. Primers like Wolf ceased during the Obama Administration and not sure why. Then as already mentioned manufacturing anything requires raw materials.

Anyway, once the demand for loaded ammunition subsides we should see primers available again. Nobody of sane mind is going to build a factory to manufacture primers to meet a short term shortage. We have seen all of this before including Sandy Hook last time around. All of this will end and until then get used to things. Endless threads are not about to solve a shortage.
