Just moved to Madawaska, Maine from Massachusetts. Anyone from the area have a favorite gun shop they could recommend? Thanks

When you decide to visit Bangor for stuff there are a couple to check. Old Town trading post and Maine Military Supply. There are others around but those are the bigies. PM if you want more. Not sure about in the county though.

What’s the job market like there? I’m almost at a position in life to move out of my current state.

One thing to keep an eye on is that the state is very close to becoming a second Massachusetts. Their current governor is not gun friendly and the Covid restrictions are downright tyrannical. Geographically the state is gun friendly but the southern part of the state has the population to decide everything. I'd be very surprised if constitutional carry survives there.

I lived close to Limestone in the very early 80’s. Don’t remember there being a gun shop in the area. Always bought guns from a guy with an FFL in Caribou. Locals were very pro gun in those parts back then.

Not a whole lot of jobs, especially with the border shut down. I was able to get a job with amhc,so could try there. Also a lot of store fronts for sale super cheap, so if you could come up with covid resistant store ideas, that’d work too.

Yeah I’m really hoping it lasts and they eventually get a conservative governor. The town I’m in is voting to become a “sanctuary town” for 2nd amendment, we’ll see how that goes. I can’t have the mass laws follow me, can’t go back to approved weapon rosters and awbs.

From everything I hear, it's probably going to happen sooner rather than later. The last year has brought a massive influx of people from Mass, CT, and NY buying up every bit of property they could find. They're not just buying summer homes either. They're relocating which means they can vote. For years you could shoot at pretty much any gravel pit but that's been changing. Same with non posted hunting land. It's hard to find a good place to hunt depending on where you are. If I was looking to relocate I might choose NH over ME at this point.

Van retired and closed his shop 2 years ago Jan. He tried several times to get me to buy him out. Too old for that now myself though.
Lepage has stated he will run again in 2022. If he does he'll win.
The basic problem is all the anti 2A Mass transplants using the greater Portland and Lewiston areas as their bedroom community's and commuting back to Mass to work.

Congrats on escaping the people's republic. When you say "northern Maine" you weren't kidding around. How wide is the St. John river there? Can you throw a rock across it?

I sure hope LePage does run again. But as said, the Boston types are all moving to the sticks, buying up every acre around, building McMansions and complaining that the town doesn't pick up their trash. Tele-commuting just may kill southern ME and NH. But look at the bright side. None of the rural PDs can fully man their rosters as they can't compete with wages being offered in larger towns/cities. Even the state police are short handed. So hopefully, no one will have the man power to waste time enforcing the edicts of Augusta.

I'm down on the "gold coast" and the cost of living (primarily property taxes) are getting pretty steep.

I hope they open the border soon, we really wanted to take our daughter on a road trip to Quebec City.

You have no idea how long I’ve waited to hear someone congratulate me for escaping the people’s republic. Dream come true. I could probably throw a rock from my backyard and reach across the river. It’s pretty much the backyard, then the tracks, then the river. That does suck about the anti 2nd people buying up the land and trying to get laws imposed. As you said, luckily the north doesn’t have the manpower to really enforce it. I hope they open up the border soon too. I have 4 young kids that have never been to Canada.

I doubt there’s a significant influx into Aroostock County of liberal southerners. We used to call it southern New Brunswick. It’s one thing to visit it during the two weeks of summer, become smitten with it and buy a house in rural America to escape your city life because now you’re able to telework.

Its something totally different to live there full time with the winters...black flies...Gypsy moth caterpillar outbreaks/migrations...constant daily weather pattern changes and the general isolation.

Great place to hunt and fish though (lots of large and small game with easy access fishing waters and square miles of public wooded lands). The locals are quirky in a cool sort of way. At least they used to be.

Hoyte, if you ever need a shrink I know one in Presque Isle. Though chances are she’s worse off than her patients.

L C Conte Sporting goods in Errol, New Hampshire just over the Maine border. The White Moose. Excellent gun shop and is in a no sales tax state.

Not near northern Maine but you need to see Rangley Lake anyway.

I've only ever been to Portland and around Lake Sebago(sp?) . Maine is a beautiful place. You're lucky to be there. I hope you find what you're looking for and have many happy years there.

Back in the late 50's, early 60's, Navy had an Escape and Evade/Survival school for Pilots/aircrew in the Rangley Lakes area. October in Maine is not a real fun time to visit. It certainly was a bleak experience...later, with PanAm, we used Bangor for a quick fuel stop with our Airbus A310's...almost a touch and go, it was so fast! That and Lobster runs back in my salad days are my only experience with Maine. Never met an unfriendly one either.

I sailed with a guy from Vinalhaven island Me. when I was in the Merchant marine. Visited him for a few days in the winter. Nice place, slow pace with some great fresh seafood.
Oh, and the locals were definitely "quirky"... ;)

Did you fly C5A's for the New York Air National Guard? ;)

Congratulations on moving out of Massachusetts. I moved from Mass to northern New Hampshire forty years ago and still tell people it was one of the few smart things I have ever done.

How about Kittery Trading Post. Not sure if that's near you. But it's a cool store.

Edit: Nevermind, it's at the complete bottom of the state.
