Sent my order in for my CMP Garand. I wanted a Service grade but I missed it by a couple weeks. So a field grade it is, as that’s all they have left for now. I hope it’s a nice field grade. I just want one for a shooter so a few bumps and bruises won’t bother me. I’m starting this thread to cover the process and my experience.

I started by sending in my package with a copy’s of my military ID, driver’s license and FFL C&R card, I’m using a credit card for payment. I did not have my paperwork Notarized. I mailed my paperwork MAY 13.

I purchased an H&R a few years ago and it's a real nice rifle.
I ordered a Winchester January 19th and still waiting. The last word from the CMP was they are filling Winchester orders from November. I guess I have a few more months to go.

I haven't ordered from CMP in a while but I recall that their requirement for notarizing was a "must". Getting a doc notarized is as simple as going to your local bank branch and asking them to provide the service. You may well get your order bounced for the lack.

Good luck...the M1 Garand is a hoot to shoot!

What's the price-bump on that Winchester?

Also, do they guarantee Winchester throughout? That'd be cool!

Todd.

I bought a couple field grade Garands 12-13 years ago. The metal had some wear in the finish and the stocks were beat up. I replaced the stocks and the rifles look pretty good and they shoot well. I kept the original stocks for when the rifles moved on down the road.

I have not kept up with the condition of the field grades in recent times.

Cool? Impossible is more like it. You have to remember that the rifles were field stripped and cleaned and reassembled over and over and that the only way you can ever find an all XYZ is if it were never issued, someone worked hard to find all the parts to make it as-issued, or a miracle happened. Now consider that the WWII guns went through depot and may have been rebarreled and there was no attempt to put a "Winchester" barrel on a Winchester receiver.

So, it would be miraculous if an as issued Winchester fell into anyone's hands. ;) It does happen, but just enough to keep us all hunting for that unicorn.

Winchesters are from WW2 and have probably been through refurbishing at least once. Hopefully the barrel matches.
I got a Winchester from the CMP in 95. It came with an original barrel, a win. gas cylinder and front sight, a clean stock with a beautifully struck GHD cartouche, a complete Win trigger group and a complete win bolt. Most of the rest of the gun is S.A. I got lucky. Today, the buttstock alone is probably worth more than the $305 I paid for the gun. Ditto for the gas cylinder and the front sight.

The CMP doesn't guarantee anything. Winchesters are from WW2 and have probably been through refurbishing at least once. Hopefully the barrel matches.

CMP does guarantee that if they say it is a Winchester, it will have Winchester stamped on the receiver.

When it comes to the other parts, they do not call them Mixmasters for nothing. Most Garands have been rebuilt at least once and parts never remained with the rifle they came from through the process.

I'm sure it is still a task of some, but when I was buying Garands 15 years ago, many spent their time looking for parts that would have been approximately correct for the manufacturer and serial number range of their Garand when it was built.

Many Garand parts are stamped with the manufacturer, the drawing number and a revision number which allows one to approximately date when the part was manufactured.

I got a special rack grade a month or so ago, which is a rack grade gun with new barrel and stock. I've only had it a month or two, shot it twice, and it is already one of my favorite guns. The metal parts are in great shape, only the gas cylinder shows the heavy pitting., but still was refinished. Everything else, I believe is refinished or in great shape with 100% bluing.

It's a shame that the CMP seems to be drying up. I hope they can keep acquiring more guns, or at least at these low prices. What a great organization.

Isn't the gas cylinder Stainless Steel?
Yes, they were. That is why they had so much trouble putting a darkened finish on them. You couldn't blue them and Parkerizing wouldn't stick to the stainless either. They tried coating them with Iron oxide and then blueing them but that didn't work out either. A molten dichromate finish was finally found to be the most satisfactory.

I picked up a Winchester M1 Garand at the south store a few years ago. It was one of the rifles that came back from Turkey.

The stock didn’t look so good when I bought it. It took a little TLC to clean it up. There’s a post I did on cleaning it up that should help if yours needs some cleaning when you get it.

The closest Notery to me is over an hour away, so not so easy. I will be in town next week and will have a second pkg Noterized just in case. I supplied a military ID and my FFL so hopefully fingers crossed they will accept it. If not no worries and good information for the next guy. Part of posting on here is to also go step by step through the process and the ups and downs.

My Service grade came sporting a new CMP stock, so you might get lucky with your Field grade rifle. If not, @GunnyUSMC (above) is the board "go-to" guy for old rifle refurb "how-to" tips. Just search for his posts.

Also, you should refer to the Tech Tips section of www.thecmp.org with regard to clean-up/refinishing original stocks. I had a couple of GI stocks that cleaned up nicely with just pure Tung Oil.

Good luck,

Harry

Anyone here in CA order one? How hard/easy was it to get it done?

Paperwork....

Update, called into the CMP, wasn’t on hold at all. I got a super friendly and helpful staff member. Yes the page 2A must be notarized. It was completely acceptable to just send in a notarized 2A to be added to my pkg. Sent in and the wait continues.
