Give me another month for hot loads. I'm going to grab my trooper 4" and marlin and its game on....
158 gr. Hornady XTP's shoot great in mine as well in my 6" barrel revolver. I shoot the same loads in both. Hornady makes the XTP in hollowpoint and flat nose and both shoot the same. The flat nose XTP is designed for higher velocity. I only use Accurate Arms #9 powder and CCI 500 primers. AA data from their #1 manual used standard primers whiie their later data uses magnum primers. My load is 13 grains of AA#9 which isn't quite maximum. I highly recommend the 158 gr. Hornady XTP in your rifle and will work well on deer to 75 yards or more. A great bullet but not premium priced. Use Accurate Arms data for AA#9 available on-line.

When I hunted with a .357 Marlin, my goto load was a 200gr hard cast WFN over 6.0gr of Unique. That’s a great feral hog load and deer stalking load for under 50 yards; but, for deer at 75 yards or more I switched to a Speer 158gr JHP and 2400 powder. I really like the Speer for their economy and they do perform well but if I were spending someone else’s money I would buy the Sierra 158gr.
H110, 2400, AA No. 9, and IMR 4227 are the goto, best all around powders for .357 hunting loads. JMHO

Lovin this stuff. I have some Hornady XTP 158 gr. Starting with Federal Small Mag pistol primers. My Hodgdon magazine says 15 to 16.7 of H110 so I will start at 15.5, then 16 grains and take it from there. THANKS.

In a .357 carbine, bigger is better... and I'm a big fan of JSP's in the carbine, 158grn and up. If you are a cast guy, a nice 180grn with a wide, flat nose would work well. Any of those over IMR4227, 2400, or H110/W296 will get the job done nicely.

I wish I could be of more help. We in Illinois are forbidden to hunt deer with any centerfire rifle, so my 1894c hasn't had any experience.
I have however taken several deer with a .357Mag revolver. Based on my experience with that, I would handload some warmer than (my) usual.....:
158gr XTP over about 6.8gr unique. I have shot this in my revolvers but, I reined it in a bit for general purpose cast bullet shooting. Think it would be a good load.
