Can anyone explain the difference between the Marlin Model 1894C and Model 1894 Cowboy, both chambered in .357 magnum, besides nearly $250 purchase price!!!! Is the Model 1894C allowed in SASS? Thanks.

The 1894C is the .357 version. The plain 1894 is .44 Magnum.

I believe the 1894C is allowed in SASS, since it's a pre-1899 design that's chambered in a revolver caliber. Contact SASS to be sure.

The Cowboy has a 20" octagon barrel, a buttplate, and a slimmer foreend with an endcap. The 1894C has an 18.5" round barrel with a fatter foreend, a barrel band, a hooded sight, checkering, a rubber buttpad, and sling swivel studs.

I have the 1894C, but a non-checkered version, and a 39M with a tapered octagon barrel. Looks like the "cowboy" series. They didn't make many .22s like that, and it's been a long time since they did.

The longer, heavier, skinner gun might be a bit better for CAS, since it should be a tad more stable in the hands for rapid fire. The regular 1894C carbine carries lighter and points quicker, but neither is necessarily an advantage for CAS. I like mine, though.:)

BTW the 1894C sight hood is removable without tools. I believe you have to remove it for CAS.

The standard has a folding rear sight, the cowboy sight is more 'primitive'. It's my ONE complaint about the cowboy model. I love mine and yes, Marlin wants a lot of money for that tapered octagon barrel but it's SWEET.

If you want a rifle to hunt with, get the model with the fully adjustable sights, the sling swivels and the pad. If you want a cowboy gun, get the Cowboy or take off the front sight hood.

i have a non checkered 36cb in 38-55 with a lyman 66 peep sight and its a fine shooten rifle. eastbank.

The 1894C is SASS legal. The only problem is that the 1894C mag tube holds 9rds of
.357 and most stages call for 10 in the rifle. I've seen some 1894C rifles that were reportedly unmodified and would take 10 .38 Spcl. I shortened the mag spring in mine just enough to take a 10th round of .357 and it has run well for several hundred rounds. This rifle feeds SWC without a hitch; some will and some won't.

AFAIK that would be all of them. Mine does, at least with the 125 grain RNFP .38 Specials that I load. Those would also be about the best-shooting, best-feeding .38 rounds in it, IMO.

WRT SASS: I take it you have to start with an empty chamber? A Marlin or Winchester lever gun is, of course, the easiest rifle ever made for "topping off" at will.
