RMR sent out an email today, a nice write up for Memorial Day.

Memorial Weekend is here. I'm not ever really sure what to do for Memorial Weekend. We have customers that always want to see a sale and we have customers that think we should stop selling out of reverence. This is one of those times where it is hard to please everyone. I personally choose to believe that those who have passed wouldn't want us to stop life for them. In so many cases, those we remember on this day offered themselves as the sacrifice needed to ensure that our lives go on. While they didn't want to die, they summoned their courage and their love for their fellow man enough to go and do the job that needed doing in order to preserve our freedom and our lives. How humbling it is to me, as a father of 6, to think of those children offered up on the altar of freedom. I can only imagine the pain their parents and family went through knowing their once giggling babies were being offered up and that their bright futures would never happen. So many have hung a gold star in their window. So many are not here so that we could be. I thank God that they existed. I pray that we don't take their sacrifice lightly. Our country is at a breaking point and I fear that our liberty is at stake. There are wispers and rumors of wars to come. I only hope we can stop for a moment and remember those who have already fought so that we don't have to do it again. Our ancestors have already sacrificed enough. We need only remember.

My wife and I (and a few of our children) watched some great documentaries on Amazon Prime last night. I highly recommend these titles for anyone who wants to know a little about what we are trying to remember this Memorial Weekend. "Dick Winters Hang Tough" "D-day at Pointe-Du-Hoc" and "The Battle of Chosin."
If you watch these shows you may want to have some tissues on hand. There are a lot more on Amazon or Netflix to watch, but I also recommend that you get out and spend time in our wonderful America. They gave it to us for us to enjoy. Let's not waste it.

Thanks to all that sacrificed for our freedoms!

As a vet who witnessed men die in battle Memorial Day is the most meaningful holiday of the year. I each business and individual has to follow their own feelings/beliefs about what they can do on Memorial Day. However, I get upset when I go to any activity on Memorial Day during which the day is not commemorated with some thoughtful words. On Monday I will have six friends for a BBQ. before food is served there will be a minute of silence observed and so I ask people to remember the Fallen in their own way for that minute. We owe our dead warriors that minute and much more.

Well said.

I think it's good if we all sacrifice a little bit in some way to help keep the freedom that so many died for.America is going through a lot of internal strife and there are things that a lot of us can do to try to make our country better.Defunding the police, rioting, looting, disrespecting other people because of their views and beliefs, hating someone for the color of their skin are things that can destroy the once greatest nation on the planet, and all of us can help change some of it.

True words Brother. On Memorial Day, I keep the head seat at the table open for our fallen brothers and sisters. No matter the branch, they honored their oath and deserve the minute of silence and respect.

I do not think a family in the USA is not affected by having someone to rember on Memorial day. My Grandfather was a runner in world war I. He earned multiple purple hearts but rarely talked about his service. He always said this day was to remember those brave soldiers that did not make it back home alive. Never forget their sacrifices, never!

Remember them. For they are the ones who bought our freedom. They paid with a sacrifice. Not of money or treasure. But with a life, a future. And we owe them all a debt. Every cemetery I pass, I remove my cap and say “thank you”. Every. Single. Cemetery. Because I think it’s a pretty safe bet there is a soldier buried there that never got what I have. And I may not know their name. But I know what they did for me. And there will never be enough trips past those cemeteries to ever say how thankful I am.

How true! May we never forget them!

My Grandfather's were WW2 and Korea. Great uncle was Korea, father was Vietnam, brother and BIL were Iraq.
My brother was second truck in a convoy that hit an IED.
Seeing what happened to him still pales in comparison to the families that have an empty space at their table every day.
I thank God my friends and family came home.

Former jarhead here.
Oldest and second sons Air Force (2nd retired as a Lt C). Dad aArmy ww2. Uncle wounded in the Bulge, uncle wounded in Aachen, uncle on North Atlantic Convoys. Uncle and cousin walked out os Chosin Reservoir. Step- grandfather mechanic in the Hat in the Ring Squadron in Ww1. All gave some.....some gave All. Never forget them!

I've watched the same episodes referenced in the message shared by the OP, among many others. Currently watching a doc about the Omaha beach landings. Not many of the guys that lived through that are around to share their stories if they even could. It's on the rest of us to make sure the younger generations know the sacrifices made by those that came before- that enable them to lead the lives they choose.

History happens every day, and the lessons get more diluted. A couple paragraphs in a Jr. High history book doesn't do justice and leaves kids with really no idea what some of you and lots of our families have experienced.

Whether you've served or loved someone who's served, you have my (and my son's) sincere appreciation.

There is a book I once read, I believe called Normandy. It was in chronological order of first hand accounts, from all branches. It covered the build up in England, to weeks after 6-6-41. Reading of the Omaha landing was quite riveting. I wish I could find that book. I think it was published in the '90s.

I'll look through what I have and let you know. I have quite a few reference books on WWII, some chronological. I need to thin out my military/history books or I'm going to need a new room added on.

Thanks, I appreciate that!

Freedom isn't free! But, with God's help and all our commitment to educate the youth of this nation on what Memorial Day truly means. We will all be better for the many who sacrificed everything to provide freedom to each one of us.

God Bless the USA!!!
