So I have a leather holster for a 1911, problem is it was molded with the safety in the fire position. Found out at the range several instances of drawing to fire and my safety was already in the fire position. First time I thought I had forgotten to engage the safety, so I became (extra) vigilant in verifying the position. Found out with normal body movement, it would disengage the thumb safety. Not good.

I like the holster and want to see if there are any trips, methods to fix this. Heat? Water? Steam?

Attached are 2 holsters, same manufacturer. One is for a standard commander 1911(right), the other for a railed commander 1911(left). The one to the left is the holster in question. You can see the difference in safety positions.

Any help is appreciated. If the holster can not be rendered safe, then I will toss it, but would like to attempt to fix it.

My belief is you have a thumb safety issue and not a holster issue. Your topic is often discussed, but in my limited 1911 experience - lots of years, but few 1911's - I've not found a sweat shield that could move my thumb safety, either off or on.

I can holster my 1911 with the safety either on or off, in very closely fit, either kydex or leather holsters, and my thumb safety simply pushes the sweat shield out of the way.

No thumb safety issue. Only time this happens is with this holster. There is a cavity/divot/relief in the sweat shield for the safety. The holster was made with the safety in the fire position.

Put the gun on safe, walk around for 5 minutes, safety is off. Use different holster, no issues. Issue repeats regardless of what gun is put in holster, whether its Dan Wesson, Colt, or Wilson. Problem has been isolated to the holster.

Is this a 1791 pancake with the sweat shield?

i have the same problem. The dummy gun that was used to mold the holster mimicked the safety in the “fire position”. There’s an indent on the sweat shield that matches same.

i just bubba’d another indent over the old one that matched the “safe” position.

Now I'm not an expert, just a hack leather d.i.y. holster maker.

Get yourself some closed cell foam. Two pieces, both bigger than your gun.
I would carefully wrap your 1911 in cellophane WITH SAFETY ON....
then thoroughly soak your holster in warm h20.
Holster your cellophane wrapped gun firmly in your soaking wet holster.
One piece of closed cell on your work surface, then gun/holster, then the other closed cell foam,
Then plywood on top and clamp firmly down. If you dont have any clamps that big, weight it down with something heavy. Cinder blocks? Spare tire? Something!
Wait 48 hrs and reveal, let thoroughly dry, re-oil.

I have an Azula holster for a 1911 full size and mine works fine. I would contact Azula and explain the problem before trying to fix it yourself.
