I have a 5" 1911 and a commander. I am looking for an OWB holster. Leaning towards a pancake style. Not really interested in something with a strap right now. Want something that the 5" will not stick out the bottom, muzzle covered.

What is out there worth the money that doesn't take weeks to get?

What is a good holster that wont' wear the finish prematurely? Kydex or leather?

Will a 1911 holster also work for a Browning HP?

Im going to assume you need it for conceal carry, check out desantis holsters. They offer many options that will cover a 5" barrel completely.

Try DIllon - Belt SLide for $75

Leather & get a lined one.

I would doubt it. measure the distance from the
bottom of the trigger guard to the top of the slide.
you don't want a sloppy fit.

Off the shelf stuff limits you somewhat.

Don Hume 721OT is usually available at a few retailers. Top Gun Supply is one.

The Galco Concealable is usually available at a few retailers, Lightning Arms Sports is one.

They also have a couple of other "high end" makers available, such as Ritchie Gun Leather and 5-Shot Gunleather that may be available.

Garrett Industries Silent Thunder STX is "pancakeish" and will only take a couple of weeks. It is leather lined kydex, a really nice option.

I have a Desantis Speed Scabbard pancake style that is the most comfortable holster I own. I've carried a full-size Gov't model many thousands of miles in it and have no plans to replace it anytime soon.

If you're interested I can make you one. This holster fits a 5" 1911 and is fully lined. Turnaround time is about 2 weeks.

Some holster manufacturers list the same holster for the 1911 and the Hi-Power while others, including myself, make separate holsters for the two.

Got my specs narrowed down. Open top, leather, long enough to handle a 5" barrel with nothing sticking out brown or black and it must have a sweat shield. Something like the pic above in post #10.

I like the looks of the one above. Who else makes this type holster besides that one and Don Hume?

Above your price range, but I have a black High Noon "Slide Guard" that is very nice.

I had one for my CZ. Good "beater holster." Just didn't like the way it would lose it's shape.

Sorry, I am thinking Skin Guard. Had a Slide Guard for a CZ compact. It held it's shape nicely.

Need to read and reply at slower first thing in the mornings.....:uhoh:

The only holster I carry my 1911 in is a blackhawk serpa holster.
I have one as well and it wouldn't be my first choice. It only gets used when I need something with retention when I open carry or go ride the dirt bike.

Don't know what your budget is but you may want to search the below link. I had a custom made basketweave pancake holster made in 1974 when living in El Paso TX for a S&W model 10, has never dropped a stitch and is as good as new today. Not bad for a holster worn 6-7 days a week for 8 years and then on occassion thereafter. http://www.epsaddlery.com/
