I have 175 gr lead cast & coated bullets to load in 40 S&W and a 10mm. Accurate #7 is the ONLY data I can find anywhere and that powder is as rare as hen's teeth. I have Universal, Unique, H-110 and HP 38. Any suggestions.

Welcome to THR!
Hodgdon online has data for a 180 BERB FP, this would be close enough to your 175 coated. If it were me I’d start with the mins there for Universal or HP38. Universal is one of the loads I developed for my .40, with 180 lead. I keep a good supply of it around since it’s so, well, universal. HP38 will do fine in .40. Can’t help with the larger cousin. Good luck.

Ty for your reply. Have received some good info from you and others.

This is from the 2002 Lyman's 48th Ed. and it lists AA#5, not AA#7 for cast in .40S&W.

#2 Alloy is about BHN 16 so it is harder than a typical coated casting lead bullet (approx. BHN 8-12?? if you know it might help). Use the starting load data for whichever bullet matches your bullet's profile most closely and you should be fine. #2 Alloy is cast hard to prevent leading and allow for higher velocities, the same reason bullets cast softer are coated.

Plunk in your barrel to get OAL.

NOTE: WW231 and HP38 are the "same" powder.

I use 3.1gr. of Ramshot Competition with Valiant 180gr. RNFP .401" in a Springfield Armory XDm 4.5" and it's proven to be a good target load. Ramshot Competition has been available at Powder Valley pretty regularly.

In fact, they have it now. https://www.powdervalleyinc.com/product/ramshot-competition/

You mentioned 10mm as well (miissed that at first glance)
Here are Lyman 50 numbers for 10mm
175gr lead #2 alloy
Universal 5.5-6.2 1032-1145fps
Unique 6.1-7.0 1097-1224fps
W231 (=HP38) 5.5-6.7 1023-1189fps

Thank you so much for your time. Looks like I'll be buying the new Lymans Book. All I've been using is Modern Reloading.

Consider listing a general location. Maybe the section of your state.

Perhaps a member can help you locating some of your preferred powder.

Stranger things have happened.
Thank you again for your time & effort. Will be going to Crestview Florida about 30 miles away on Monday for Dr. appt. Will hit 3 of the 5 stores there to see what happens .People here have helped me w/ load data for the powders I have on hand but there is no such thing as too much powder. I buy 2# at a time when possible in order to leave some for others. I do the same with primers. If there are 2 bricks I buy 1, if 5 I buy 2. I don't believe in hoarding so everyone has enough to defend ALL of us if necessary.

Always good to have more than one reference, and if you're going to load cast they Lyman manual is an excellent one. If you plan to load cast bullets across a number of cartridges, Lyman also has another book specifically for that. But start with the main one, as it includes plenty of cast bullet data

Thank you and everyone else here for your help. The people here are veritable fountainhead of knowledge.

Looking back through the thread it seems we all forgot to mention the most important reference of all: the personal “pet loads” book. What have you been doing for.40?

During the last powder crunch(the one a few years ago before this one) I made a list of all the powders that had listed loads for the round I was interested in.
That way when I got to the store I could check what they had against the list.

Maybe make the list and stick it in your pocket or snap a pic of it with your phone, that way you will have it in the store.

I own a Lee 40cal-175gr bullet mold and here is the data I collected for testing them: 4.2gr-5gr Bullseye ( source claimed that he shot 1/2" group at 50 yds ), 5.5-6.1gr AA5 ( 5.8gr best load from source), and 6.4gr-8.0gr Blue Dot ( best claimed load is 8.0gr). I've shot one test load so far using 4.6gr Bullseye and 170gr Lasercast bullets. Using my Browning HP - 40cal, I printed a 4" group at 30 yards with 80% in 2".
