If you couldn't have an AR....

Based on the variety of replies, now I'm wondering how much the price tag comes into play regarding the various options you guys have listed?

The Mini 14 and Garand can be had for under $1000, whilst I assume a Tavor or AUG is going to be close to double that (though I confess I haven't checked).

I'd probably try a Mini-14 again. Maybe an M1A in 6.5 Creedmoor. I'd keep my AR magazines to use with the 7615.

I don't have an AR. Not one. I've owned 12 and a few of years ago I sold them all. I got tired of the AR thing. No matter what you do to them, underneath they are all the same. 12 rifles, 10 in 5.56 and 2 in 7.62. Who needs that little variety. And I never felt the needs to have one for home defense. If I can't defenmd my home with my Glocks, 12 gauges, or lever action rifles, an AR won't help.

I would not be upset in the least bit, I already have several other options at my disposal that I prefer to ARs, specifically AKs. If we are talking only 5.56, Galil Ace for me. I just acquired one of the last Gen 1s I was able to find for sale for a very reasonable price, I’m looking forward to taking it out to the range in the next few weeks.

My only AR has sat in the back of my safe since I bought it a few years ago, only got one because it was they were so cheap at the time. I just don’t like them and have shot several different types in several different calibers.

I’d probably go with a 16” CZ 527 in 223 topped with a 1-6x or 1-8x scope of some sort, but I really don’t want to figure out what I’d do without an AR.

I already have it... my Springfield M1a Socom16... a 16" barreled M1a with a muzzle brake. Loaded with 110grn Hornady TAP ammos, the recoil is about the same as an AR, and it pushes that 110grn bullet over 3000fps even out of the 16" barrel. The .308 is more versatile than some people think.

I've never personally owned an AR, so it's possible to get by without one. They've just never been particularly appealing to me.

I'm a fan of the M16A1, but don't find the stubby little carbines with rails and doo-dads all over them appealing at all. I had a HK93 once, but the ten pound weight didn't make sense to me, considering the caliber. (5.56) So I traded it for a boat. If I'm gonna pack a ten pound rifle, it's gonna be a M1. !!! :)

I've had SKS's a long time before getting an AR. Probably get an AK.

I have a Cetme in 7.62x51 and like it, would like an FAL. If I had to have a 5.56 for whatever reason, Mini 14 would get looked into a lot. I have a definite fascination with the Marcolmar Cetme L's.

A lot of people have listed some very nice things to have in addition to (or in preference to) an AR, but assuming I wanted a direct replacement: Kbs wz. 1996 Beryl
