I went to the range early this morning arriving before 6AM. I had the place to myself except for one brass snipe and he didn't even come around me. I took 5 pistols. I use the term like other geezers do. If it is a handgun it's a pistol although only one was a revolver so don't get on my case too hard.

I took a S&W 15-22, single six, GSG 1911-22, S&W 22-a, and Ruger MK III 22/45 lite. Some needed sighting in and a couple just needed their zero checked. All wear reflex red dots except the 15-22 and it has a big ol' BSA 30mm tube sight stuck on it. Why? Because it had been sitting around for a long time after I removed it from a pellet rifle I gave away. It's big and bulky but sure is easy to find your target with and I'm getting some use from it again. I shot super x and cascade, both bought back in the last years of that pre-Trump administration. Both are less than stellar in quality but I decided they will do for grandkids to kill coke cans, rocks, and steel with. I had quite a few "clicks" with both brands except in the single six which shot it all. I took some CCI HV to compare and it wasn't even close. The CCI all fired and gave much better groups just like I expected.

It was a pleasant outing with little wind and I enjoyed myself. I just might get in another sunrise shooting session Sunday morning. Different guns of course but some will probably be 22 rimfires.

Nice! CCI is the way to go for .22lr. Can order directly from their website at normal prices.

Nice! What are your opinions on that GSG 1911? I have a Marvel 1911 conversion and would like to get my 45ACP back.

Not wanting to steal thunder from @doubleh, but I have a GSG 1911 22lr also. I have very good reliability and accuracy from my GSG. I shot abox if ammo last evening and shot up some (too big) zucchini from mrs garden. Mine is target gun accurate and totally reliable with quality ammo, only a few problems with cheapo plinkers like thunderbolts or Winchester wildcats. The GSG is my favorite 22 handgun right now. It has a light rail and good sights even though some parts are polymer (or maybe plastic), it's a keeper!
I wanted to take some pics of it and the dead zukes, but it was too dark by the time I got done plinking.

I'm anxious to see if @doubleh is as impressed with his GSG as I am....

Nothing beats a day shooting a few guns. I try to do it every week and shoot my main gun, a Black Mamba, but I always bring one or two others to keep my hand at them.

Glad you had a good day. It's nice being the only shooter on the range.

I mostly shoot CCI Mini Mags, CCI AR Tactical, and CCI Standard. I have found that my Kel-Tec CP33 prefers the AR Tactical, My Glock G44 and 4.5" AR22 pistol prefers CCI Mini Mags, and my S&W 22A and Ruger MkII prefer CCI standard. I have a GSG 1911 22 conversion slide but I think I might have finally wore it out. It is having failure to extract and eject even with new spring installed. I couldn't tell how many rounds I hav shot through it over the years, but it has been a lot.

Out of the box it was an OK gun. Pretty much just another 1911 with the exception of being a little lighter than the real thing and having very little recoil. Mine came with a very good trigger. The one thing I did not like was the main spring housing. I prefer a flat housing and replaced it with a steel one plus the beavertail while I was at it. After my various upgrades it is one of the smoothest, slickest operating pistols I have ever owned. I prefer it over my Ruger MK IV and MK III 22/45 lite in the way it works. My Rugers have the Volquartson trigger kits and I added the TandemKross slide racker rings to them so my great grand kids could rack them easier. The GSG is easier and smoother with the Taylor Tactical bar and his reduced power mainspring than either Ruger. All three of these will shoot standard velocity ammo reliably and that is my preferred ammo. So far the MK III and the GSG are equal in accuracy using red dot sights. The MK IV is the most accurate but I'm cheating with it as I am using a 2x scope on it right now. I am not in love with the scope and it is in danger of being replaced with a red dot and then I expect to see about the same accuracy with each.

PS: I do not just drop the slide with the slide release on the GSG. The slide is aluminum and doing so will wear the notch over time. Just like Armored Farmer I find all three guns to have problems with the cheaper plinking ammo but it isn't the gun's fault. I will be really happy when the ammo scarcity finally goes away---if it ever does.

Here it is. Not exactly pretty but very functional. The silver button is a loading assist tool I made even though I could have purchased about the same thing for around six bucks. The picture is from before I added extended slide and mag releases.

After I shoot up the "odds and ends" ammo I picked up here and there, I really don't think I'll ever buy anything but CCI again for my .22's. I use the "Choot 'em" for hunting stuff,(hollow points) and AR Tactical (round nose) for target and precision work. They never fail, always cycle even my most finicky semi's, and are the closest thing I've found to match ammo in a bulk option, (boxes of each come in a 300rd pack) shooting very tight groups with a consistency that pleases my OCD on the range. They are the best .22 ammo I've ever shot, IMHO

I always like to start out every range session with a .22 semi-auto. Helps me to concentrate on trigger control and with acquiring a decent sight picture; all without little if any felt recoil. I have a Ruger Mk.II (very accurate), SIG Trailside (also accurate and with a very light trigger pull), Beretta Model 70S (very reliable with just about any ammo), and a TacSol 2211 conversion kit on an old Essex frame that I put together (still in the process of dialing this one in with the right ammo).

nice story doubleh. due to highway robbery centerfire ammo prices, and a large stash of 22lr & wmr ammo, courtesy of b. hussein & my recent discovery of cci online sales, im mostly a rimfire shooter these days. as did doubleh, i always bring along a ruger single action revolver, single six or bearcat, to clean up any stray rounds, plus i like their deliberate pace too. i often carry a ruger lcr 22lr as a ccw in my dull, safe, retiree’s daytime wanderings. i enjoy shooting 22 handguns so im decent with them.

rabid wombat

My Mk.II was part of a limited edition made by Ruger for one of their distributors. There were 2000 made with a blued upper assembly and a polished stainless steel lower receiver. It only came with the 5 1/2" bull barrel. I remember that the fellow who had it on his table at the gun show also had a Single Six Bisley with the same set-up: a blued frame and a stainless steel grip frame. It looked very sharp, as did the Mk.II and they were both the same price! I only had enough money for one of them and I had to remind myself that I did come to the gun show that day to find a new .22 target pistol, so I went with the Mk.II. It's a beautiful gun that is also very accurate and reliable. I have been very happy with it. To be honest though it was kind of hard to walk away from that Bisley!

Now my Beretta Model 70 S is hard chromed, courtesy of Ron Mahovsky of Metalife. It cost me $56 to have the gun plated, way back in 1987! Still looks as good as the day I got it back from them!

This is an excellent regimen...I often do this as well.

Ditto!
The .22lr has always been my favorite cartridge to shoot. I don't see that ever changing.

I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one.

Thank you both for the feedback. I really appreciate it. I have spent allot of time with a GSG "MP5SD-22" and a "AK-22" that are tons of fun and generally function well. The SIG GSG (mosquito, not firefly).... not so much praise, not much of any. Again, thank you. This appears to be a decent lower cost option. I have been looking for extended and threaded barreled options for these 1911 GSGs.

Great looking guns!

What I wouldn't give to be able to shoot my .22s at 6 a.m.... That sounds like an awesome morning. Just be sure to set the coffee to the left to avoid brass in the cup.
