From time to time I play with testing different rounds and how they penetrate. Mostly I use old catalogues as testing media. They are almost always very consistent but there was one tidbit which always bothered me. It had to do with some .22 magnum rounds:

The rounds felt weak and inconsistent when I fired them. The way it seemed to work out, the magnum rounds showed less penetration than the LR rounds from a handgun. :uhoh:
While I was at the range today I decided to retest the .22 magnum rounds along with some .22 LR rounds out of the same gun (with different cylinders) using the same media for side-by-side results.
Note: all shots taken at 25 yards out of a Heritage Rough Rider revolver. Yep, still got it and it's still shooting.
.22 Remington 36 grain LR HV HP. I put six rounds into the cataloge. Five of the six penetrated a total of 422 pages very consistently. The sixth cut through 552.

.22 MWR CCI Mini Mags 40 grain flat point advertised at 1875 fps. Four of the six rounds penetrated through 1110 pages and continued. One penetrated 970 while the last went 882 pates.

.22 Magnum Winchester Super X semijacketed hollow points, 40 grain. Four of the six penetrated all the way through 1100 pages. One left a significant chunk at 790 pages and the rest either disintegrated of passed through the rips which propagated all the way through. One left about half of its jacket at 720 pages and the rest vanished.

There was obvious difference between magnum and LR damage to the cataloges. Damage with the LR was localized with the rounds flattened thoroughly but mostly intact. Damage from the magnum rounds was much broader with indentation and ripping several times the diameter of the rounds themselves. What remnants of the bullets left behind were flaked jacket and tiny flecks of lead.

Both boxes of magnum rounds were consistent. The Winchester Super X felt a little hotter than the CCI, grouped a smidge higher through both did well at 25 yards. I was gratified by the results and feel better being able to compare the two side by side with long rifle rounds from the same revolver. I suspect that I got a bad batch of ammo the first time (somebody gave them to me and I'm not really sure how old they were or where they were bought). I do remember they had some failures to fire on the first try which bothered me as well. All rounds today fired on the first strike and performed as advertised.
Cheers,

Thanks for the test.

I would have also liked to see the results using .22LR CCI Stingers and .22LR Velocitors.
