Ammo comparision in 17HMR.

That explains why the Hornady was real close. All of them would be fine for hunting woodchucks. It was perfect conditions today too. No winds and upper 70's. Last few outings i was dealing with some winds. Nice temps though.

OP stated at 50 yards.

And last time I checked CCI still makes 17m2 and 17HMR for Hornady. I'm n0t sure who makes Federal 17HMR.
Ahhh missed it, thanks.

I've heard for some time that all of 17 HMR ammo was made by CCI and simply branded differently. Don't know how true that is, But I've had generally about as good performance from all of them depending on the gun.

I knew that CCI makes all the Hornady 17m2 and 17HMR ammo but wasn't for sure about the Federal stuff. It wouldn't surprise me if CCI makes the Federal 17HMR ammo too.

I've read that CCI is the only company that actually makes 17 hmr ammo, so CCI, Hornady, Remington, Norma, Winchester, Federal, and Browning, are all made under contract by CCI. This is just internet hearsay, I have nothing to back that up.

That is my understanding also. I have shot CCI, Hornady, and Remington in two guns. The only difference I have seen is between bullet weights, One gun shoots 17 grain better than it does 20 grain bullets and it is the opposite with the other gun. I bought a couple of boxes of Winchester quite sometime ago but haven't shot any of it. If CCI made it I expect no difference, If Winchester made it and it is like their newer 22 LR ammo I expect it to not be too good.

I've also read that CCI manufactures winchester's 22lr 100 round plastic boxed ammunition, but bulk ammo that comes in the cardboard boxes is manufactured by wichester themselves. That seams logical because all the winchester 22 ammo in 100 round plastic trays that I have tried has shot great and has been 100% reliable, but the winchester bulk ammo is awful.

I have shot some of the newer Super X Winchester in the plastic boxes and it was not great. Lots of dud rounds and poor accuracy where the same guns did just fine with CCI branded ammo. I won't be buying anymore Winchester rimfire ammo at all. It's priced higher than CCI and not as good so why waste money on it?

I got a really good deal on a couple cases of Winchester Supreme .17HMR 17 gr Tipped ammo years ago. It was awesome, if you like constant misfires. More recently tried some of their newer stuff, just as bad. I would not be at all surprised to find that CCI does make all the .17HMR ammo, other than Winchester. In my experience, CCI, Hornady, Federal and Remington have all been pretty comparable. While Winchester has been and still seems to be mediocre, at best. Hopefully I have learned my lesson and will resist any future “bargains” on Winchester rimfire ammo.

My Savage Model 93HMR17 pre accu-trigger definitely prefers the A17 ammo by CCI. My groups with zero wind simulate the original poster Coal Cracker Al, but at 100 yards from a bench. Needless to say I did a trigger job on my rifle. Using the other ammo, including the Hornady, and going up to 20grain projectiles not so good.

I have listened to less plausible statements being stated as unequivocal fact despite any evidence. So I’ll buy it, for now. :) One source that backs that up for 4 brands. I don’t think S&B makes it anymore and don’t know about PMC.

It is true that CCI actually loads all of the .17 HMR ammunition for the CCI, Federal, Hornady, and Remington brands.

We are limited on who actually makes both 17M2 and 17HMR ammo. And years ago, there were only two companies that made 17m2 ammo. For the older 17m2 ammo, I prefer the Eley and Eley/Remington 17m2 ammo, it shoots better than the CCI made ammo. CCI is the only manufacturer of 17m2 ammo these days.
