I have both and unless you modify the 10/22, I see them as very different guns. My 10/22 is a fun plinker and fun to modify. Get a 25 round mag and call it good.
My .17 Savage, bull barrel, laminated stock for about $380 is very accurate and well built. More of a longer range tool with great accuracy. More expensive to shoot. I was bench shooting mine this weekend and it is consistantly accurate. I was getting nickle sized groups at 40 yards off a wobbly bench and a couple sand bag supports with a breeze. Perfect day by the way !! I also think it is great gun to build shooting skill before upgrading to a longer range/caliber.
I would say keep the 10/22 stock and get a good bolt .17 HMR.
