Hey guys,

Western/Ramshot has a great .45 ACP +P load (230g Gold Dot I Use) at ~950fps I use using Silhouette, and it is perfect for SD/low light loads. Goes out of my 5in Colt Government Series 80 at around 930-960. Very manageable and no excessive pressure signs w/ WSP primer. Duplicates most factory 45 +P loads.

I'd like to use the same powder for 357 Mag with a 125g Rem Scallopped SJHP, but Ramshot has no data for Silhouette with 357 Mag.

So, my questions would be does anyone have any trustworthy loads for 357 Mag using that powder out of a 4in tube, or an equiv. flash suppressed powder for SD/Low light?

PS - To Mods: I take all legal responsibility for any loads listed by any posters that I may use in my firearms.

Thanks

You're velocities are going to be pretty low with that powder.
You would be better suited with something slower than Green Dot but faster than Blue Dot.
I found Autocomp to be perfect for 125 grain bullets with minimal blast while keeping near max velocities.

There is 38 +P data for it. You could start there. Generally 110 percent of 38 +p data in a 357 Magnum case gives equivalent velocity to 38+p.
This is an at your own risk and a chronograph is necessary.
I used to do this until I got a large supply of 38 cases.

Ramshot Powder Reloader's Guide Edition 4.4 shows a 357 Magnum load for 125 gr Barnes XPB with a range of 7.2 to 8.0, rated just above 1000 fps. Your SJHP should be very comparable in loading, but generally that powder was not meant to produce magnum velocities, or they would provide more data. True Blue and Zip, that are also included for lead bullets, are featured before you get up to Enforcer.

Expect that a powder that burns fast for the magnum will have sharper recoil (pressure spike) than an actual magnum powder.

One of the many reasons I like IMR 4227 in the magnum. IMR means "Improved Military Rifle" - it is flash suppressed powder. I'd try IMR 4227 (not H4227 - they are two different powders) before trying Silhouette.

There are many choices, but he is asking about Silhouette, which is actually in a range of velocity that should work really well with lead bullets as another choice of bullets, and cheaper.

True. Sorry, I read this part -
...or an equiv. flash suppressed powder for SD/Low light?
- and thought about IMR 4227 almost immediately, which is not equivalent in burn rate to Silhouette but is a good .357magnum powder for cast and jacketed - and is flash suppressed.

Yes, and I missed the SD part. I think his "equivalent" is tricky too, because given any other choice, it would be better suited than Silhouette, i.e load data would be plentiful.

So your exactly in the place I was. I use the data for wap powder and am very happy with the results. My primary load is 8.4 grains behind a 158 cast bullet. If intrested PM me and I'll send you what I use. The speer manual is the source....

I can't help you with any Silhouette loads, but BE-86 has worked well for me in 9mm, .357 Sig, .45 ACP and mid range .44 Mag loads.

It has performance close to Power Pistol, but the flash suppressant makes it a lot more pleasant to use in low light.

They show loads for .357 Magnum but I can't figure out how to link them directly. Follow the link below and choose "Show all BE-86 Loads".
